isn't that usually a sign of a vacuum leak. thats what popped to my head but i could be wrong.

I'd expect a vacuum leak to throw a check engine light. :ponder

High-pitched whining always sends me looking at belts first, but... :dunno

yeah, i didn't understand what his post was saying. i would assume the belts first but i thought he was saying it wasn't those.

could be a pulley, or the belt. i would take a crack at the idler pulley, main belt tensioner and a/c belt tensioner. Check the belt for cracking, make sure all the pulleys are there.

if you have a mechanics stethoscope check the pulleys with it.

...the idler pulley, main belt tensioner and a/c belt tensioner....make sure all the pulleys are there....

What he said. Make sure the one that bolts to the upper alternator bolt is still there (provided your engine configuration has one - some don't). I've had cars come in with the pulley completely gone, and the back of the belt riding directly on the inner race. Makes a bunch of noise.

It's likely one of the two or three idler pulleys. They're about 30 to 60 ea, depending on if your tensioners are hydraulic or mechanical.

Whenever I suspect a pulley or belt I spray some WD or something like it on the various pulley's and see if it quiets at all. If so, you know the source. Good luck!

I started with the possibility of Supercharger fairies. That lead to the word Blowers... It got worse from there...

Does the noise quit when the car warms up? Is it linked RPM or speed? Shifting have any affect? Come on man, some information to work with here?

If you ever want to borrow kotter's fan wrench at any time...drop a suitcase filled with $1,000,000 at the top of the parking deck in front of the office building at 5pm today. No cops!

all good questions,

the car was warm when it started. it sounds like it is coming from the belt area . as the gas is pushed the noise gets louder, or so it seems.

Pulley, belts, tensioner, power steering pump.

bbaz

power steering pump.

Oooooh. Good one here. P/S pump low on fluid would definitely make some noise, and BMW has yet to produce a reservoir that doesn't leak. Odds are pretty good you're low on P/S fluid anyway. Top it off while you're in there.

+1

Mine is close to the mythical leaking level where you don't have to change the fluid because you're steady putting in fresh stuff :)

Mine had a pretty loud whirring supercharge-esque noise when the tensioner pulley started to go on the accessory belt. Spraying the back of the pulley with wd40 shut it up for me until i replaced it a few days later.

if it is the belt tensioner pulley, do it quick because you don't want it to go while you're driving. If you haven't changed this yet and you have lots of miles on your car you might as well.
