Huh, I thought he was just trying out rallycross after I showed him how much fun it is. :)

the kook optimo's were great although I have some slight tread compression and feathering on the fronts. Very glad I had them once someone started kicking gravel out into the apexes 3 and 8.

I must be the only one... I HATE driving that car in the rain...

If one hates the rain it is usually because it exagerates weaknesses in the driver...... :D
I'm not picking on you Jeremy, you're certainly entitled to dislike the rain and some cars/drivers are better suited to the dry than the wet. And tire choice makes the difference between a predictable car and a car which is knife edged at the limit. Obviously it is harder to learn on a knife edged car.

Smooth drivers in 'low powered' cars love the rain because it puts high powered cars on a more level playing field with lower powered 'momentum' cars. (especially if the higher powered cars are stiff and less forgiving at the limit)

If you view driving in the rain as a tool to help you develop, you'll start to love driving in it.

I hate rainy track days, but for an entirely different reason - the cold/mess is what bugs me. It is usually really cold, all my crap gets wet and the car is absolutely filthy inside and out. That said, I have no issue driving the car in it and being out on the track in the wet is great fun; I do enjoy that part! Dealing with the rest of the wet weather by-products are why I dislike it. Swapping tires, wet tools, drying everything out, etc. Blech. I'm tired of it too: In the last 3 years I've had about 75% of my track days in the rain. I guess I'm an unlucky bastard.......except that my dry track tires have been lasting forever. I think they might dry rot before they cord. :(

Given the choice I prefer 65F, a gentle breeze and partly cloudy. It really helps the social side of things too if everyone isn't spread out and huddled under any shelter they can find.

We really had the best of both worlds, heck most of my gear dried up on sunday so it wasn't too bad.

"Uh, is that c5 having a mechanical issue?...Oh!" :D

Next day, it dries up.
"WTF did he(c5) come from!?" (exiting t3 - pointby)

There was also this white e36(with 00x numbers :shifty) that overtook me quite readily, thing was haulin'! I think at apex of turn 3 you were +10mph on my top speed for the straight.

The most impressive driver/car combo in my group had to be Clay in the Merc, he kept saying that he didn't want to push the car hard or drive fast, just enjoy the track. Talk about smooth, cool and collected, he was passing (and/or lapping in my case) everybody, even the guys who were talking about how fast they are! I'd love to see what happens when he decides to really uncork the thing.

"Hmm, yes it was getting a bit nippy out there on track, so I decided to turn up the heated seats, steering wheel and gearshift knob, I also adjusted the heater to 73degrees. This made the session much more enjoyable."

Lets not forget, the only member of the Mercedes club at the track talked them into treating us to pizza! What a guy! :buttrock

For the record, I was only out there with you guys because my buddy Marc (dark silver Mini CooperS) had a mechanical issue that kept him out of his last session so I offered to take him out for a bit. You looked good out there!

Yeah, Clay is pretty much calm/cool/collected all the time! He did look very good out there and tossed that thing around pretty well! I felt bad as he was following me through the inner track and we were behind a Subaru who was tossing gravel onto about every apex (geesh, this isn't a Rally Cross!) so I was nowhere near the line. He called me on it too after the session saying I wasn't driving the line they taught in the classroom......DOH! That's true, I was in avoidance mode in case that Subie made a mistake and I was well below 6/10th to keep pace with the car in front while waiting for the next passing zone. I was definitely NOT on-line while I was in front of Clay through there and I probably should have been if for no other reason than to try and set a good example.

The pizza was awesome on Friday. If the other MB club members are 1/2 as cool as Clay we should invite them out all the time!

Good on ya for that!, it's a bummer when mechanicals keep people from having fun. I wasn't complaining about you being out in our group, just noting how well you were getting around the track.

I could have sworn it was a rallycross when I came through turn 3 at speed and and saw the gravel after I was already pointing at it. Instructor goes - :eek2

and Chet... I think that had saturday had been dry, I would have been able to finish that ONE day at the same point I instead finished the WHOLE weekend... I was fighting too hard to master too many things (like remember the order of the corners!) to deal with the rain too... way too much cognitive noise.

it doesn't help that every time I've been in a car and something bad happened... it was wet/raining.

I agree, the rain had terrible timing, especially for first-timers. Just when people were starting to 'see' it gets all cloudy and rains. Had it held off until you had a few more sessions under your belt it would have been better.
Get a couple more schools under your belt and the rain simply opens your eyes to mistakes you didn't know you were making. Plus, trailbraking is a perfect skill to practice the first few times on a wet track.

Respecting the rain......I was happy to see that you guys had an opportunity to try wet track driving. It solidly demonstrates how much one needs to slow down/be focused on the street when the heavens open up!

^^^ werd.

the biggest trick now is finding another school to do... I would like to do the IA school, but will be in Tucson that weekend, and there are no other BMW events close to us, which would mean finding an event where an instructor I know will be present and willing to sit with me...

and I REALLY want to get in a couple days at MAM with an instructor so I can go to the Find the Line event at MAM in August and harass my brother's fox body!!!! :D:D:D:D

You know you could always come out to Colorado. Our spring school is the weekend before MAM. Then you could feel that BMW power at altitude!

In Jeremy's defence...he had the sway bars and shocks set to full hard from autocrossing. I think he's learned now that track driving is different so maybe next time he'll soften it up a bit. I showed him a trick to prep the car for next time to make adjusting the rears much easier.

My tire stock for the e30 dropped dramaticly after this last weekend. I never intended to drive the IS as much as I did and it had my DD tires on it. Needless to say...they are bald now. My only other set are some Falken's and those are down to nothing. My snows that Jeremy has are no longer good enough to be called snow tires (M+S anyway, not true snows) and with the rain we've been having...I want something with tread :)

George talked us into having a drift battle VS. him in the bacardi bus, so we mounted up my tires in the front and the ones off your car in the rear and let loose with some hairy dorifto burnouts. Jeff got involved too, it was madness to see the m5 sideways with the trailer behind it.

F**king Subaru drivers. They do that here too. It really pisses me off. I've had more than one rather unpleasant conversation after a track session where they were doing that.

Now I've never stereotyped a bunch of people simply based on what kind of car they drove as if there were some sort of personality profile you had to pass before purchasing a particular make.

But if I did that I would have to assume all BMW drivers were a bunch of older aged pretentious German a-holes that didn't care about anything other than how good they looked in their cars. Obviously this is ridiculous. By the way my first dream car was a BMW 850ci when I was 16 years old and I would have looked sooooooo good in that car.

Fortunately I've had the pleasure of meeting a great bunch of guys who just so happen to own BMW's and were more than willing to welcome in a "F**king Subaru driver" to their classy club. None of which fall into the above mentioned stereotype.

If I happened to scrub some gravel onto your track on Sunday, I apologize for the inconvenience and hope you didn't have to go to far off your line to compensate. Perhaps if I had a BMW I wouldn't have made the same mistake. And with all due respect I'll drive exactly the same way in any car I own. I will push myself to always keep learning while testing the limits of my car and myself.

And before you call someone a "F**king" anything I'd recommend offering to buy them a beer first so you might have the opportunity to get to know them and not make a fool of yourself.

Great weekend every one, I truly had a blast. You certainly lived up to all the expectations I had for a BMW club not only in your class act of organizing a wonderful track day but superb instruction and friendliness. Sorry for the bit of gravel but I didn't feel like going agricultural. See you in Pueblo.

Cheers

Ryan

Relax guys, no one here can say they haven't put a wheel or two (or four) off. I'm happy to be on track with anyone who comes out. One person's opinion obviously does not speak for the group as a whole.
