View Full Version : Best time to travel NORTHBOUND on I95 on a weekday?
ESMcBlurM3 04-27-2008, 01:06 PM I'm heading from South Jersey to Rhode Island on either Wednesday or Thursday, and I'd like to arrive in RI before 5pm. What's the best time to get through the chaos of the bridges/tunnels around NYC? Would it be wise to take the Tappen Zee Bridge (sp?). I'll be taking the Jersey Turnpike up...
TIA!
amancuso 04-27-2008, 01:36 PM Never! LOL just kidding, but seriously, its always risky... can you not find an alternate route?
SKooT1027 04-27-2008, 03:04 PM Leave just after rush hour traffic in the morning. If you leave at like 10, you should be fine. There won't be northbound traffic again until like 3ish usually

Ha! I just don't know the area very well. I hear the Tappen Zee is suppose to save from some traffic. Do you know any alternate routes from South Jersey to Providence, RI?

Thanks for the advice!

I'd probably be leaving tomorrow around 10am. That gets me crossing the city around noon...
I may try the Tappan Zee - anyone have any experiences?
Jackoosh 04-29-2008, 12:36 PM take the train

lol - i would if i could load my car onto it
GatorM 04-29-2008, 01:49 PM Or very early. If you can get across the river and past 87 before rush hour really hits, it's totally clear the rest of the way up.
foundingfathers 04-29-2008, 02:13 PM if 95 is really bad u can always jump on the merrit rt 15 from like exit 3 to 39 its the same exact distance.....and it goes rite back to 95 and once u get past new haven its clear roads i go from new haven to ri everyweekend
Mad Machine 04-29-2008, 09:19 PM best advice is already given.. if you can hit NY at 10am, you will be fine.
Same with early, hit it before 7:30 am and you are golden
ESMcBlurM3 04-29-2008, 10:36 PM thanks for the help guys. just got in from the phillies game and I'm going to back up the car and leave hopefully by 8.
Mr 4500 RPM 04-30-2008, 01:50 AM I personally from NYC would take this route. White stone bridge to Hutchinson Parkway to Merrit Parkway (CT-15) up to exit 54 I believe which then you can cross over to 95 around say exit 29 I believe. The merrit is a nice drive if you have not done it before and pretty scenic especially this time of year. Then 95 to wherever. If you want to stop by and say hello and show me your CD43 HU ;) I am right off of the merrit parkway :). But just wishful thinking.
RisBMW 04-30-2008, 09:28 PM Wouldn't go as far as the Tappen Zee unless traffic was really backed up. +10 for the Merritt though --- great road with some nice (as in classic looking) bridges crossing it. Have a great ride!

The CD43 is awesome!

Thanks for the help guys, made it up here in one piece. I just went across the GW and the Bronx Expressway...wasn't too bad at all around 10am.
Take care!
RisBMW 05-01-2008, 01:18 PM Welcome to New England!!! Got your panels on yet???? -- no time to rest.

Thanks man! And no, not yet. The car is absolute disgrace right now...she'll be getting a day's worth of treatment on my first day off (but that day isn't on the schedule yet...:embarrasm)
The panels are still at my buddies (augy) house.....:(
