View Full Version : Help/suggestyion needed ASAP. Clutch on floor after CDV delete.
00BMW540i6 04-26-2008, 06:03 PM So I took out the CDV and bled the clutch with help from someone else. We kept the fluid topped off and bled a lot of air out of the line, but now the clutch won't come off the floor unless I pull it up.
Does this mean there's still a lot of air in the line and I should keep bleeding it? It's getting dark and I have my first AutoX tomorrow so any help would be greatly appreciated!
jburnham 04-26-2008, 06:09 PM I messed up my CDV delete - I didn't want to damage the line so it was very loosely clamped and when I rolled out from under the car, the clamp came off and the fluid pissed out. I couldn't believe how long it took to get it bled. I had to get a helper to vigorously push the peddle down, I then closed it off, she pulled the peddle up, repeat. I went through several containers of fluid before it got firm, and quickly went to perfect after that. Go buy a bunch of fluid and get to work - it should come back.
00BMW540i6 04-26-2008, 06:10 PM Thanks for the quick reply. I have about 12 ounces of fluid left right now so we'll see how that does.
DocPeters540 04-26-2008, 06:35 PM I have yet to do this, you guys scare me. I will have 1litre of fluid to do this. Will this be enough? Any advice?
ArmySweitzer 04-26-2008, 06:46 PM you need to search on how to bleed it, theres a trick of removing the slave and point it up because by design its pointed low, push the rod in and crack the bleeder valve.
Search for bleeding clutch and there should only be a few results and its like a 7-9 post length thread if i recall, better directions then I gave. Good luck!

+1. I did the CDV delete a couple of months ago. The pedal thing will not do it...you're gonna have to bleed the slave cylinder. Unbolt the slave and press the rod all the way in and open the bleeder valve. Repeat until you get pressure back in your pedal.
I had a hell of a time pressing the rod all the way in while fumbling with the bleeder valve. So I used a Quick Grip and drilled out a depression in one side to fit the end of the slave cylinder rod into. Worked perfectly.

chiefwej 04-26-2008, 08:41 PM For others doing this. Before you start, make sure the master cylinder is full. The clutch uses the back (toward the steering wheel) portion of the reservoir. Pull the little rubber plug off the bleeder valve and use it to stop fluid from coming out when the line is pulled. if you have a helper, have him (or her) keep the reservoir full. If no air gets in, you don't have any to bleed, and the air gets in when the reservoir runs dry.
This job can be done with no bleeding needed.
gdizzle 04-26-2008, 08:45 PM ahh i had the biggest pita doing this bleed job.

Thanks for the tip. I tried bleeding for another 20 mins using push/pull and still no luck. Time to unbolt the slave I guess. :(

I worked at the push-pull thing for probably half an hour. Once I unbolted the slave and bled it, took maybe 10 minutes, tops.
jburnham 04-26-2008, 08:55 PM For anyone else considering this job - it isn't hard unless something goes wrong - and even then, it isn't hard if you have enough time and fluid. As long as you fill the reservoir before you start, and change out/remove the CDV without draining too much fluid, this is an easy job. If you hork it up like I did, then you will need to read up to bleed the system.
540i6crxguy 04-26-2008, 09:42 PM i did the cdv delete at work on a lift with a vacuum bleeder so all of my info might not apply to you, but right after i finished bleeding, the clutch pedal was on the floor as well, after i pumped it like 10 times it became normal. have you tried to pump it up at all with the system sealed?
00BMW540i6 04-26-2008, 10:57 PM I tried to pump but it didn't work. I pulled the slave off and bled it by hand and the pedal came right back up, job done. Thanks for the help guys, it got the job done!
Just to add...it wasn't a hard job at all, it was just time consuming because I didn't know about the slave cyl. bleeding tip.
dgz32 04-26-2008, 11:45 PM Sweet! Now go enjoy your new car :)
