View Full Version : Paint Bubbles Under Hood - Problem Later on?

Guys

I had a thread earlier about my considering an '06 M3 with very few miles that has one problem: a jump start incident that melted a few components under the hood.

I've had the car checked thoroughly for electrical and mechanical faults, and am satisfied.

The problem is the paint under the hood. A subsection has some burn damage, which is fixable. However, behind the noise insulation later on the underside of the main hood sheet, we found some paint bubbles. Most of the bubbling was wiped away, but spots still remain. The issue is: that if the heat there was high enough to cause paint or primer bubbling on the underside of the hood, then can this cause paint damage on the top? I mean, it's aluminum - very thin and highly conductive. It must have gotten very hot on the top as well. I worry about microcracks or peels on the top surface. Nothing is visible today, but will it be down the road?

My service advisor at BMW is balking a bit, while the dealership is assuring me that no problems will present themselves later. Otherwise the car is pretty much perfect though. What do you guys think? Your QUICK feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since its an 06, you would be covered under the factory warranty till 2010. Ask the dealer if this incident would be covered if something were to turn up later. Better yet, sweeten your deal and request they give you a discount on purchasing the extended CPO warranty......so you would be covered until 2012. To ease your mind on the purchase of course. :)

I doubt this will be covered by the warranty since the original damage was caused by owner error. I've also negotiated the price as far as I could and now there are a couple of others who want the car too. No way they will reduce the price further - they don't care about my mind at this point!

The dealership is guaranteeing the work however. I just want to make sure the paint holds up.

Any opinons or advice?
