View Full Version : Lions, Tigers, & VANOS SEALS, oh my!

So I finally installed my new seals, with some mishaps from me breaking my engine cylinder head cover/ valve cover.

It is important to read Raj's write-up from BeisanSystems.com very carefully, and not hurry because you have screaming kids and a wife after you.

I missed (2) of the (4) center bolts on the valve cover, hence, me snapping a corner of the cover with a flat-head screwdriver.

Also, it took me a VERY long time to loosen the 32mm nut on my cooling fan.
Use PB Blast to loosen it up. Spray and wait for 10 minutes.

I tried ordering a used cover from Turner Motorsports, but after the SECOND cover from them being damaged and cracked, I decided to say screw it, and buy a brand new one, guaranteeing the structural integrity of the cover to be in-tact.

Turner gave me the run-around for a little over 2 weeks.
They were not willing to compensate me for the lost time, or their F*CK-UP sending me SH*TTY covers.
They will only take back the latest messed up cover for a refund.

What baffles me, is they still want to sell a BAD cover.

Also, I broke the plastic nosel the fits into the right side of the radiator, while trying to take off the original hose clamp.
The plastic elbow exploded!
This let me know how SHOT my cooling system is!

Once I finally got everything together, and flushing the cooling system several times, I noticed an immediate difference in how the car drives!

So, if anyone is in doubt doing this job, DON'T be!
Everyone should get off their ass, and do it!

I noticed my cars shifts much smoother and it waits to shift and much higher RPM's.
The car feels MUCH quicker!

All of this after only 50 miles!
I have to wait until 500 miles for the seals to fully break in!

So, after my first drive to work, I noticed steam coming from the hood!
I pop the hood, and see the upper radiator hose has popped off where it connects to the radiator, and ALL the coolant is GONE.
I connect the hose, and call my mechanic immediately!

He says crank the heater to full, and try babying the car to his shop.
I try to drive it on the off ramp, and I see my gage moving on up!
I pull over.
Wait.
Turn on the car and drive it about a block, until I see the needle move to red.
I turned the car off right away, popped the hood, and called my mechanic.
My mechanic sent someone out to fill the coolant.
My car made it out alive.

The next day, I noticed coolant on my garage floor.
I took my car mechanic, and he does a pressure test, to find out that the upper radiator hose, and radiator is bad.

All of this started with a vanos seal install.

Sorry for the long write.

Thanks!
Jason

The new seals are $60.
Plus, you need to buy the gaskets, and other small parts.
See this:
http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures/vanos_procedure.htm

And check out the list of parts.

Plus, check out BeisanSystems.com for other procedures that are VERY helpful.

Good read as to what to watch out for, I have my VANOS seals, a few replaceable parts other still coming in. I'm hoping to perform the procedure in a few weeks.

Can't wait!

Glad to know it's finally done Jason! And I'm baffled too as to why Turner wants to resell the cracked valve cover that you returned??? So now just replace the broken cooling system parts and you'll be good to go. You're going to feel THAT much happier after ~500 miles, trust. :buttrock

Another thing to remember when doing this job is to get the 32mm flat wrench and holder.

I would recommend getting this:

Or this:

You don't have to, but I think it would make things much easier.

I used a regular 32mm wrench and a flathead screwdriver pinned again the pulleys as leverage.
PB blast is your friend.

once you get the Fan off the first time... it's like cake every other time. screwdriver /wrench combo FTW!!!

Take the air box out and then reach around and hold the fan belt while turning the wrench and the nut will break loose with ease,
