View Full Version : 1st accident in the bimmer...

So basically here's what happened. Wednesday, driving home from probably one of the worst days of work that I've had in the 3 years I've been out in the real world, I was about 3 miles from my exit on the turnpike probably going 80 in the left lane. Not the car in front of me, but the car in front of him blew a tire, slammed on thier brakes which forced everyone behind them to slam on their as well. We all had enough distance between us to miss each other and we were paying attention. Apparently the kid behind me was either following too closely or he wasn't paying attention.

He slammed into my back end with his 2003 mazda 3. Basically all the damage was done to his car. Both airbags went off and his front end was pushed pretty far back. I'd assume it's totalled. All in all he was a nice apologetic kid.

Onto me and the bimmer. When I got hit my head snapped back and hit my haedrest. I lost conciousness for a breif second but managed to get off to the left shoulder. It took me about two minutes to get my bearings back. Dealt with the cops, and decided not to goto the hospital. Was able to drive my car home but started getting lightheaded with an intense headache on the way. So after dropping off the car, went to the ER and turned out that I had a mild concussion (my 3rd) and wome whiplash.

Took my car to the shop yesterday and got the estimate, just under 3k. It needs a new exausht, a new rear bumper and to have the trunk pulled. They overnighted the parts and are getting started on it today. I should have it back and detailed by middle to end of next week.

...all in all it could've been much worse, I could've been in something like the rental they gave me (cobalt)...

And I guess the moral of this story is don't fucking tailgate me!!

04-25-2008, 08:51 AM
Hmmm....thats a good moral you shouldn't tailgate people but didn't his insurance company pay for it all? i mean i woulda done some aftermarket stuff to same some cash n then done a few little upgrades to get something out of it, but thats just me.

Glad to hear you are mostly OK though,

yeah looks like the car held up well and as for doing extra mods with it that would be called insurance fraug lol just figured I would say it

The insurance stuff kinda pisses me off. Basically there are two ways of dealing with this.

1. I go through my insurance. Pay my deducatble. They go after his insurance and repay my deducatble after it is settled.

2. Wait for the police report and go through his insurance.

Option 2. means I would need to wait for the police report, and since it was a state road, it's an NJ State police report which takes 15 days. Then I would need to deal with them as to where exactly I could take the car and whatnot. To me this was unexceptable.

Option 1. means I need to pay 500 bucks up front and would have much more options. I can take the car wherever I want and have a free rental. And on top of that if I brought it to a shop that was GIECO certified, with an onsite adjuster I basically get consierge service. Meaning they overnight parts, they have an onsight enterprise, they will call me with updates and monitor the process and make sure there is absolutely no downtime on the car. It get's detailed afterwards.

I went with option 1. I didn't really feel as though anything else was really needed, aftermarket-wise on the back end. If there was any damage to the suspension I would've had lowering springs put on, but nothing was, so that's a project for when it come back.

^very true. but it's jersey. fraud is prevelant here. they most likely would've given me shit for that and not paid for it or gauranteed it.

...oh and thats another cool thing about going to the gieco shop, it's not only gauranteed by the shop, but by gieco too. So if anything goes bad I can take it anywhere to have it repaired.

And the shop is really nice, clean and I've heard a lot of good things about them and thier work.

Anyone know Carstar in Pennington?

Sorry, but I just had to do it... Anyways, I think you made the right decision, after all, it is what you pay insurance for.

May I rant?

F tailgaters man! Wtf are they doing following so close? Honestly, are you gaining anything by being able to read the tags on my license plate? Congrats, you now know that my plates expire in July and that you'll be eating that plate if you don't freakin back off a little.

Why on earth do people do this? You think you are going to get somewhere faster if you are a fraction of a second away from my bumper? Well you aren't going any where fast if we're stuck on the side of the road exchanging info.

I want the police to start ticketing people for tailgating, the amount of accidents and delays on our freeways would plumet if people would jsut give themself some freakin room!

You were lucky man, that damage doesn't look bad at all. I hope you are feeling better.

01 325xi
04-25-2008, 12:31 PM
^ you're absolutely right. but i need to say i'm not sure if he was tailgating or not paying attention. i hadn't looked in my rearview prior to the crash to see it. but those are the only two options.

and the police can ticket for tailgating, they just don't.

i want to preface what i am about to say with the fact that we were all going atleast 80 on the turnpike. but even if someone is dogging it on the road and driving below the speedlimit, it still doesn't give you reason to tailgate. i mean anything can happen (in my case something did). flash your lights at the guy, pass when you can, use your horn. they are all much safer methods to get your point across.

why this guy was tailing me, though???...i don't know.

100% agreed. My other ride is a Honda GL1800 road sofa and there is no such thing as a little fender bender on a bike.

On another note, I got the estimate from the insyrance company and all their pictures. They are really overpaying for parts. But oh well...

my dad tailgates rly bad!! i always give him shit for it but he has never crashed...recently :shifty... he has been honked at for tailgating!! but i no its going to happen one day and hes gunna regret it. (my dad is not even alowed to touch my car)

your very lucky, even your car dosent seem that bad considering the persons behind you was totaled. i guess thats what it comes down to the diffrence of buying a kia vs. a BMW, you will survive a crash. Thats the real only reason my parents helped pay for half of my car, so i f i get into a crah i will live.

yup, insurance is helping, just overpaying. i'd have to cover my deductiable either way so it doesn't bother me at all. plus i should get it back once gieco and his insurance establish he is at fault and they issue payment to my insurance.

so what...like a year? haha...damn insurance.

nate, haha, yea...doesn't look it huh? the exhaust is the biggest piece. it was bent so the entire thing is getting replaced. plus two holes in the bumper and the trunk was slightly crinkled in...

I must say it's hard being without your car while it's getting fixed. Sorry bout the accident

I got rear ended in my 330ci by a ford explorer. I was at the stop light right by the exit ramp and the light suddenly turned red so i stopped quick and the guy getting off the highway wasn't paying attention and slammed on his brakes i could hear the abs kick on and i was like wtf is that noise? Then i looked in my rear view mirror and saw him coming he just didn't stop in time and hit me.

I saw him coming so i eased up but i couldn't go any farther without going into traffic. It was $6,000 in damage. I didn't want some random body shop fixing it and having the clear coat peel in like 6 months  so i took it to my local bmw dealer collision center.

lol sucking up all the gas for sure. I can't help but laugh everytime i pull up next to a prius. I'm guilty of doing the same :(. Last time i was on the freeway (carpool) doing 80mph already. Some guy behind me tail gates me. I mean i dont even see his headlights any more. So i slow down to 55mph. Then back to my original speed. He then stayed his distance. I guess he figured the closer he go to me the longer it would take him to get to his destination. :dunno

I swear, some people's logic on the highway is this:

1) Accelerate until you are 1ft from the bumper of another car.

2) Stay there, regardless of speed.

3) If that car exits before you do, go to Step 1.

I currently in the process of training to be a geico adjuster starting june 2nd. I do know they do cut you a check, not pay the shop. They just negotiate with the shop how much they are going to charge to fix it. If you can get everything for cheaper using the check you pocket the money$, but lying and saying the damage is more than what they cut you, ie getting the zhp and saying the damage is more is fraud.
