View Full Version : Gas...everywhere!

So, I just bought a programa board and replaced it without a hitch. Took out round the hood to see if my gauges worked now...and they did! About a mile into my joyride I noticed it smelled like gas:confused. So, I brought her on home, only to notice that there was gas well, all over the road! It is puddling right behind the oil pan and I noticed a lot -think excessive- accumulation on my driver's side wheel well. I will delve into it on the morrow but, in the meantime, I would love some input!
~Thanks

Scary scenario, you'd probably sprung a massive leak on your rubber fuel hose, either the feed line or return line. Another possibilty is one of hose clamp is loose missing. The connections for both fuel hoses to the underbody metal fuel lines are between the transmission tunnel and lower left fender so it makes sense where this area accumulated the most fuel. Don't cheap out on the fuel injection hoses, get the oem Bmw 8x13mm high pressure hoses. They are relatively inexpensve. Also, I would put in all new hose clamps, just for safe measures.

Update:
I tried tracking the leak up from the puddle- I don't have much clearance to see but, there is fresh fuel right under the brake accumulator- is there a fuel line right below it? I'd like to know before I rip my brake accumulator out...

This is almost the exact route of the rubber fuel hoses to the connection points of the metal fuel lines. You probably have a rupture in this vicinity.

You don't need to take the brake accumulator out, you will need to jack the car up. The fuel lines run from the fuel rail directly under the master cylinder to the hard lines below, can be replaced while the car is on jack stands, as stated before use only fuel line rated for fuel injection systems.

Thanks for the help, I'm devoting tomorrow to get this thing fixed...and I will definitely use OEM fuel lines.

while you are under there, you might want to check all the fuel lines at the tank and fuel pumps also, if the ones at the front are shot than the tank lines will be probably be in similar condition.

very good advice.
NEVER replace broken fuel or brake lines individually if they are broken because of their age. This is a safety issue and it would be a matter of (short) time and you have the same issue elsewhere.
