I've got an '85 635Csi with 244k that's got some lifter noise. It's not too bad yet, but I want to take care of the problem before my daily driver blows up. Are the lifters hydraulic or mechanical? I'm thinking about replacing the lifters, but I need to know if I have to replace the cam at the same time.

No lifters in an overhead cam engine. Just adjust yer valves

Adjusting the valves is easy. Has an eccentric adjuster. TDC the lobes and adjust, easy as pie.
Now my M6 on the other hand is friggin' shim over bucket. Just like my Honda 750. Oy vey!

Oops. I was thinking lifters because my Jeep is OHV. I hear a ticking sound from the upper part of the engine though. Any ideas?

Thanks for the input. I'm going to school to become an automotive technician, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have the experience. You guys are awesome!

Unfortunately there are no aftermarket manuals for the Six, so get a Bentley BMW 5-Series '82 to '88 service manual (Green cover, $40 at Amazon) and read it cover to cover since you are in school. The manual has some great systems descriptions and you will learn a lot and you will remember it better because it is relevant to your Six, you can go look at it. The material on the engine, drivetrain, suspension and many systems is so close to the Six, i sometimes forget that I am using a 5-Series manual!
Have you downloaded your free PDF file of the ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual) yet?
