We offer part number USSE5 (order for pre-1986 models) specifically to fit your car:

The second post lists many of the choices:

Early Z3 from dealer about $55 or you can do what I did. Cut the eye for the shift linkage from the bottom of the gear shift lever and put in a 5/8 spacer of steel and weld. This was the measurement I took off a Z3 lever. Lengthen it too much and you will have clearance issues. I did this for my 81 euro spec

I have a UUC, but it wouldn't fit correctly in the shifter socket. The new delrin puck doesn't sit low enough so I can't get the clip ring back in. I had to make an external clamp to hold things together. Now that I know what I want, I will machine something out of delrin and aluminum. However, now that it is holding fast the car shifts great. I like the precise, notching in feel.

Ditto on the UUC shortshifter and DSSR (selector rod). Fantastic system, before it was like stirring stew, now it's snik, snik, snik

You either have the wrong part, or the lower bushing is upside-down. Please call ASAP so we can figure that out for you!

Does UUC have a DSSR fitment for the E24? Their site doesn't show it. I'll eventually get an SSK from them too--I had one for my E46 and loved it!

Yes they do but I (think) it is labled for the M5, I called Rob and he sent me the right one.
Rob, time to update the web site.
Both pieces were so beautifully machined I didn't want to mount them down where it's greasy and gritty. Transformed the shifting feel.

Thanks for the reply, Rob. I will certainly contact you for replacement parts. I took a look at your site and it looked to me like bits are indeed missing. Based on what I see, it looks like a PO might have just slapped in the shifter with otherwise stock components. But I don't see how that could be done without interference problems.
