View Full Version : Caught off guard by Camaro SS
jaramill 05-15-2003, 08:29 PM Was leaving work a week ago Monday and was heading south on Rancho Conejo Blvd in the Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park area towards the I-101 Fwy. So I get to the light (pole position) middle lane and on my right lane (also pole position) is the new Camaro SS. I've seen these at auto-crosses and they can motor for sure.
Well the light turns green and I had a feeling he'd mash the gas and sure enough he did. Boom off we go. I knew he'd take me off the line since he has a V-8 and I have a V-6. But here's where I was caught off guard. We're crossing over the I-101 Fwy to get to the on-ramp to go on the I-101 Fwy southbound. This is a newly paved created on-ramp with a slightly high-banking 270 degree turn. We're talking Formula-1 type of turn!!
Anyway I figured I'd catch him on the curves since I'm on the outside lane, and he's on the inside and he'll slow down. Well let me tell you I had no such luck. He was handling better than I expected. I felt the ASC kick-in a bit in my car and though I'm tailing him, I decided to draft him by cutting across behind him into his lane to catch up. I did and I'm right on him. Then we're coming out of the curve and.......
He leaves me standing still :( I was like WHOA! So I decide to ease up because CHP could be around (it is rush-hour). Then I catch up to him, give him the thumbs up and then he takes off again.
So beware of the Camaro SS. It's got some grip.

Phattydave 05-15-2003, 08:46 PM Wow, you live really, really close to me didn't notice before, Westlake Village over here.
jaramill 05-15-2003, 08:51 PM Actually I work there, I live in LA (Brentwood area). I work at AMGEN. If you see my car I have the ///M Power decal on the windshield.

What do you mean? Doesn't the Camaro SS have a V-8 in it? If not then he must've had something up his sleeve.

abakos 05-15-2003, 09:32 PM Try again...
V6:boink
wicked 05-15-2003, 10:42 PM Don't you mean Inline-6:D
abakos 05-16-2003, 05:31 AM
SS stands for Super Schneaky:eek:
Carzzi 05-16-2003, 10:47 AM The GM 3200 Vortec V6 is a direct drop in for the M3.Pontiac Grand Am 4-tip exhausts also fit quite nicely, thank you very much.
Don't forget the fuzzy dice.

1BMW2VWs 05-16-2003, 01:57 PM Looks like you guys embarrased him, and he left! :D
jaramill 05-16-2003, 02:14 PM No I'm still here but I'm a bit shocked that the Camaro SS had a V6.....oh wait...excuse me.....has 6-cylinders. So he was equal to my M3 that ALSO has 6 cylinders (3.2 liter). NOT A V-6. Sorry for the mixup. Now I do feel embarrased but not enough to not admit.
Now next time I see a Camaro SS, I'll have to come back stronger.

Mikey52 05-16-2003, 02:27 PM No, no, you were right about the Camaro.
But the SS is indeed a V8. I'm completely lost here...

You - 3.2 liter inline 6
Him - 5.7 liter V-8

jaramill 05-16-2003, 02:33 PM Oh so I was right then. I just screwed up saying my M3 has V-6. Very bad on part. :( Okay so the Camaro SS is a worthy opponent. Hmm...a bit confusing. I try not to take the posts to seriously and it's all in fun. I'd need an ///M5 or get him off the line quicker next time I encounter one of these beasts.
Thanks for the clarification josh01.

never happen.
SS with a good driver and minor work will run 12s. I'm not trying to be mean man. I would buy your car over an SS. Just trying to fill you in.
SS vs the M5, you sayin' the SS would win? Wow...
woadyson 05-16-2003, 03:33 PM top of the line camaro has an LS1...:nono
woadyson 05-16-2003, 03:37 PM as in chevy CORVETTE LS1...:nono :nono :nono

I stand corrected. I guess my initial confusion was why I was being dogged....guess saying an M3 has V-6 got everyone's attention. :) But yes he did stomp me good.

No offence taken. Hmmm....guess I'd need my ultimate dream car to really take that Camaro SS.......Dodge Viper.

Now the Corvettes I don't EVEN bother with (unless it's the mid-1980s Corvettes) when I know that if it's a half-way decent driver, I'll get smoked. I just know when to respect power when I'm over-matched.

slickav 05-16-2003, 05:55 PM I think he would of had you even if you were ready. Also, you don't have a V-6..........you have an I-6 ;)

I think he got that part already.:D Also, I don't think you would need an M5 in order to beat a Z28 SS; I believe a E46 M3 would be up to the task....
John (PA) 05-16-2003, 09:58 PM I've been killed by 2 SSs off the line. You can't compete against massive tires and torque at a light.
I'm at about 320HP too.

By this.....do you mean that the M5 is faster than the M3? On the highway I have heard of the M5 pulling on the M3. However in any real race, i.e. dragging or circuit, I would think the M3 would be the victor.
Also I havent seen all the best times for the two cars but from experience at the dragstrip for the most part it is easier to drive the SS faster. It would take a crappy SS driver and a good M3 driver for the M3 to be the victor IMO.
I might be biased though. I know a guy with a crazy fast SS with very little work. I think he ran 12s with minor air induction work and slicks. I also have a friend in college who showed me his friend's ride which was a 600hp/10 sec monster.
ludestyle 05-17-2003, 02:17 AM Jaramill, how in the world did you think the Camaro SS had a V-6 in it. I thought that it was pretty much common knowledge that it was a V-8............not for some I guess
MisterSLOW 05-17-2003, 01:15 PM SS will beat both the M3 and M5 on the street. Of course Im assuming stock vs. stock. Ive seen it happen probably 5-10 times. Of sourse there are exceptions but generally the SS wil win.
josh01 05-17-2003, 02:19 PM I know a local guy who is running 12.984 with a completely stock Camaro Z28 plus $150 lid (intake). He is trapping at ~108mph and cutting 1.95 60' on the stock tires. I'm starting to think being a poor college student I should bag my e36 m3 plans and just buy a z28 considering I almost have enough money for a '98 saved up.

You will need to make up your mid....
* If you want a straight line monster with the ability to mod up for dirt cheap, the Chevy is for you.
* If you want a great overall sports luxury car, that still has the ability to take most cars on the road, get the e36.
Plus would you rather drive a Chevy or a Bimmer?
:b_blue:
MisterSLOW 05-17-2003, 02:45 PM Everyone always talks about how the Cobras/Camaros, most American cars, are only straight line cars, but who really cares. When do you really nees to have a car that can take a turn at 40 compared to 25 or 30. The drivabilty is fine in a Camaro, and the insides are not bad at all. Not saying that its a Bimmer inside, but its not some KIA shitbox.

Wait......... Does he have a E46 or E36? A E46 M3 would beat a Camaro SS for sure;) I was a reffering to a E36
wicked 05-17-2003, 04:48 PM He has the 3.2L so he would be a good match for the camaro IF he can get a good launch.:devillook

I would rather drive a bimmer any day :D...but I my standards for a e36 are pretty high, and that puts it at well over twice the cost of a z28 Camaro same year/miles. Granted an SS won't handle as well as an e36 m3, but its no slouch in the twisties either. Oh and I have test driven pretty much back to back multiple e36 m3/Camaro Z28 in the past few weeks and hands down the m3 has far better interior, exterior, build quality, handling, road feel, etc...but damn does that ls1 pull.
SilverStreak 05-19-2003, 10:40 AM A few things. With a skilled driver in the SS, the E46 M3 and E39 M5 would have their hands full, it would be a good race.
Next, the reason you could not catch the SS on the exit ramp, they handle real well on long, consistent turns, credit those big tires and stuff suspension.
Where a BMW would give an SS trouble, in terms of handling, would be at a slalom or Auto-X with several transitional turns, back and forth, etc, due to the weigth and aging chassis for the f-body.
But keep in mind, the Camaro, live axle and all, is still a sports car. Meaning, it'll outhandle several cars on the road...
Ron17 05-19-2003, 10:41 AM How anyone could get "caught off guard" by a SS is absolutely beyond me. :95
Justin and I talked about it this weekend and agreed.
:dunno
SilverStreak 05-19-2003, 11:12 AM True, you do hear them coming.... :D
Ron17 05-19-2003, 11:25 AM :::drool:::
God, I do love the sound of those engines.
Let no one ever call me a BMW snob, because I'd sure as hell drive a SS. I like the sound of the big American V8s.
SilverStreak 05-19-2003, 02:27 PM Ron, you ever hear one with an aftermarket exhaust, like a B&B Tri-Flo? Talk about ecstasy....
Ron17 05-19-2003, 02:46 PM Seriously... can one get enough aural pleasure? :D

Ron17 05-19-2003, 02:52 PM Ding, ding, ding!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!
Rod, tell Dave what he's won...
SilverStreak 05-19-2003, 03:51 PM A Camaro SS, by chance??? :D
