What other 6 cylinder engines and manual transmissions fit into 6ers without any major modification. i ask because finding a 6 in good condition for a decent price is looking to be a hard task. and if i was to purchase one i might have to replace the engine and or trans.
any information will be appreciated. thank you.

There are plenty with good drive trains available so I think if you search well you will find a nice combo. These engines and trans (with exception of a poorly maintained Auto) are very durable and will last for many miles if not overly abused. So if you are going to be cheap you could end up buying a parts car. You are more likely to find something with tired paint and interior that needs a suspension rebuild than one in need of a drivetrain transplant.

You can buy the proper engine in good condition for maybe $500. You're looking at a minimum of 3 grand for any kind of engine swap. Alpina is right, the engine is the longest lasting part of these cars. It's not hard at all to find a car with a very good drive train.

yeah i can vouch for that. i paid $150 for my rust free E24. sure the paint and interior are tired -- but aside from a full tune up, the engine runs like a top, tranny is butter smooth and its never left me stranded :)

and just for my knowledge what is the name of the manual transmission used in the 635 and is that same trans used in any other bmw models?

Any transmission that mated with any X-35 car before 1993 will work, so you can find the Getrag 265, 260, 280, and 262.

I can think of 5 different 5spds that were in the e24 chassis. 4 of these were found in the 635 (3 for the US models) and one was M specific.

Really? I thought it was just a standard 5-speed, dogleg, and auto. Thats really interesting.
