View Full Version : How much for M-Sport?
wanderlust 04-20-2008, 01:37 PM I've got a 1995 540 M-Sport 6-speed I'm getting ready to sell. It's in excellent shape, 180,000 miles with the original Nikasil block (recently passed leakdown test w/ flying colors). It has traction control. EDC intact, front shocks replaced 30K ago, rears working fine w/ no leakage. Any suggestions on a starting price? Obviously Kelley Blue Book/NADA is of no help here.
Binjammin 04-20-2008, 02:05 PM $5. It's really not worth anything. I'll be happy to drive it to the scrap heap for you, I'll need the title and bill of sale first though.
Seriously though, depending on how perfect it is, I'd suspect $10 for a ratted, poor condition model, and 20+ for a mint mint model.
lowell 04-20-2008, 02:08 PM Canada or US M sport? Service records or no service records? Color?
The miles are killer...with that transmission and an original nikasil. If it's a US car, I'd say 10 grand if the body and interior are *perfect* and the car has records. Probably more around 6-8k if there are flaws. A high mile US spec 6 speed M sport with a newer alusil couldn't pull 7 grand on eBay last fall, and that car had dinan stuff thrown at it.
Binjammin 04-20-2008, 02:11 PM Uhm, isn't the m-sport the one of 32 car? I thought they were all canadian. Lowell, are you thinking of the 540i/6 sport?

fkong777 04-20-2008, 02:57 PM dont listen to those lowballers. This is a car you cannot really sell quick. You have to state your price and see if offer comes in. It can take months.
Ebay doesnt do well with this car because with the limited time it in on the Auction you most likely will not find the buyer that may be interested in such a rare car.
you may get penalized for the nikasil block. so I say list at $15k or OBO. See what reasonable offers come in. You will need plenty of pic and some test drives and inspections.
wanderlust 04-20-2008, 09:42 PM I'll post a classified here when I've got pics.
eightynine535 04-20-2008, 10:48 PM post on BMWCCA classified. I am sure you will find more traffic there.
lowell 04-20-2008, 10:52 PM Uhm, isn't the m-sport the one of 32 car? I thought they were all canadian. Lowell, are you thinking of the 540i/6 sport?
There are a few hundred US spec M sports, in auto and manual gearing. Other countries (Canada, Australia come to mind) got limited edition cars that were essentially US M sports with ATE M big brakes, headlight washers and interior options. The canadian version could also have M cloth, and a few of them that I've seen have rear heated seats.
The Canadian M540s are like the Canadian euro E36 M3s -- command a premium for their rarity and options. And the fact that you can walk one into the US, in the case of the E36. Finding an original, unmolested one is difficult. And a lot of people are looking, which is why they sell for what they do.
Not knocking the car, but I think most people see the US M sport cars as a 540 sport with a few options. They are frequently available for sale. But, I always say, it's only worth something to someone who wants it. The challenge is finding the one person who's going to buy.
dont listen to those lowballers.
:rolleyes

Thanks for pointing this out, this car proves my point.
This is a US spec M sport/M540i, not just a 540 sport. It wasn't driven much in its first five years, and it started out as a california car, so it's possible that it still has a nikasil. Could have had an undocumented alusil job, as it has gone almost 100k in the past 8 years. Looks like this lot picks up the trade ins from the BMW dealer that's about a mile away. Looks pretty good in the pictures, desirable color combination, the body panels line up, no door seal compression. Some driver's seat wear, and it doesn't have heated seats.
The economy's convulsing these days, people are getting squeezed big time and don't have much disposable income...look at what's happening with the E31 market...but I'd say that if the right person came along, this dealer might get 12 out of this car. My gut feeling is that this car will be on his lot for a while, sorry to say.
