Guys, I hope that this will be simple. I would like to get some opinions on a noise that I have coming from what it seems like is the alternator.

When I start the car i get a high pitch squeel from the alternator area. This was not long after I had underdrive pulleys put on. After driving for a few the sound drops to a minor whine. I'm thinking that this might be my alternator bearings going bad. The belts are a proper tension, for i know what belt slip sounds like. I would like to get some other thoughts on this before I go spending any money.

Thanks for any help,

A squeal from the alternator area when the engine is started is most commonly caused by a slipping belt. But failing bearings in the alternator or a tensioner are also possibilities.

I'm pretty sure its the alternator. I would think though that the tensioner would help keep the belt from being to tight. Wouldn't it?

The belt tensioner pulley is a more common source for that type of noise, and it's part of the bracket that holds the alternator, so it's easy to confuse the two. But a long screwdriver placed right near the pulley will give a louder feedback than when it's placed on the alternator if the pulley is making the noise.
