I think it might look end up looking pieced together. I believe even all black interiors have light grey headliners... isn't it a trademark kinda thing? Kinda off subject, but even my black 7 with black interior has a grey headliner and pillars. See what others have to say ... again JMO.
When I bought my 7 I thought the headliner had been replaced with the wrong color... I quickly checked other cars. It has grown on me as no doubt you can tell.

Just out of curiousity ... CSi? Black headliner that is.

What color is your car?

oh i donno, it was never officially a M car.......i would hope it does....if SCHWARZ means black then there is a black headliner offered by bmw....possibly for the csi

Schwarz is black ... and it would work with the interior...

My interior is gray... I had to replace the headliner right when I purchased the car. I asked for it to be redone in the stock color... it is. BUT the finish on the material is not stock, I wish I would have spent the extra bucks and had it done right. I didn't know then, I do now. Golly I hate pulling my 8's pants down on a public forum.
There you have it, that's why, the whole story of 840Rod's headliner.

While you gent's are on the subject of interiors, I would have to agree with Rod. My headliner, especially under the sun visors, is sagging quite a bit but I don't need to replace it, just needs some hot glue!

I do have a question that's semi-related. How do I go about getting the white leather, the one that was very rare for our 8s? How much do you think it would cost?
I'm definitely set on doing it! >:).

Cheers all,
Thomas

Be careful with the hot glue. I spoke with an interiors guy about the headliner on my 7. He told me not to hit it with an adhesive as that can ruin the board if you are going to recover it. It's what I've heard so I'll pass it on...

If you're going to go with a whole new headliner from the dealer ... then no biggie. I understand the dealer charges about $800 or so ... not installed.

Yup - it's not a glue issue, but a foam issue. The foam rots out underneath the fabric and no amount of glue is going to fix that - many have tried and all have failed...

A great place in SoCal to get any interior done is Westminster Auto Upholstery in Anaheim. Pete has won numerous awards for his work and his shop is one place that you know the job will be done right the first time.

BTW - had mine all redone in a light grey suede - VERY sweet. Definately moves the interior of the car up a notch to where it should have been when it was built.

Not a budget way to go -
but I think the headliner and all four pillers were right around $700.
As I recall, the headliner was about $4-$500 on it's own, with the material being half of that cost. The PO had also made an attempt at a repair (probably using a hot glue gun - LOL) that had to be "cleaned up".

My car is black on black and came with the light grey interior. My opinion is put in a color you like, Its your car. Personalize it and or make it different than the next guy, or if not you can return it to completely stock later as headliners are fairly simple to do (just costs more or less depending on if you do it yourself or pay to have it done). I personally ordered a darker color than stock (charcoal). If you are a DIY kind of guy you can get swatches to see what colors you like and then order a kit from WLS headliners (no affiliation) shipped for 60 bucks. Its high quality REAL headliner material, glue and generic instructions. There are a few posts and pretty good DIY around if you are interested. WLS 888 381-9805. They also have a website that you can look at to see what colors you might be interested in...

pinned what do u think of black or dark grey headliner in a light grey interior car?

I think it would look nice, wouldnt have to worry about the interior being too dark (like an all black on black with black headliner would do). Probably offset the grey nicely. You should get some swatches/samples and see what you think. There are some real nice dark colors around including some variations of black.

Sounds like a nice choice of material. From reading the posts it appears the main cause of headliner failure is the foam vs adheasive between the roof and the cloth. Did you replace the foam with new foam or some other type of replacement? When I was looking to buy my 8 series, unfortunately almost every one I surveyed had a sagging roof liner. Seems like a weak point with the series.

i never touched the headliner....never even tried to clean it....i took it to to the upholstery shop and the guy told me someone washed it before....i wish i can just buy new pillars, headliner, and sunroof cover but prices even at cost are way over a grand....so im just gonna have them redone in black and pray that it comes out nice...

What about the visors? They're grey. If you do a black headliner wouldn't it look weird with grey visors?

Rocky, was it real suede or ultrasuede.....?

Did you replace the foam with new foam or some other type of replacement?
It was stripped to the bare board and built up better than new - so yes there was a replacement put in.

suede or ultrasuede
Going from memory (that was months ago) I'd have to say it was ultrasuede. I also had the rear deck recovered in a black (ultra?)suede at the same time - definately helped out a lot as well.

FYI, someone from clube31.net mentioned a place called Bon A Rue in the city of Orange that also does a pretty good job with headliners. I was going to take my car there to get my headliner replaced last year but put it off. It would be interesting to compare the cost from each place.

In terms of color, I really think the grey makes a great contrast with the black.
