View Full Version : is a fan shroud completely necessary?
rt turbo 04-18-2008, 09:50 AM I bought 2 16" spal fans for one push and one pull. Is it complete necessary to make a shroud so they pull and push through it to go to the whole radiator? Or can I staggar them on different sides to achieve the most flow? my intercooler is so large I cannot run the stock fan and shroud in front.
turbosporttsi 04-18-2008, 10:17 AM Putting them back to back is not achieving any more flow than just the one. Stagger them. :)
pbonsalb 04-18-2008, 10:19 AM I have 2 Spal 16 inch fans and no shrouds. The fan is still pulling heat out of the radiator, but not from the full surface area (probably less than half). Shrouds would make the fan more efficient at cooling. I have toyed with the idea of making a shroud for at least puller fan, but space is tight with the extra crank pulley for my supercharger drive.

yeah, I thought about that as well.
pbonsalb 04-18-2008, 12:00 PM The stock shroud won't help an aftermarket electric puller fan mounted to the radiator core very much. It will help a fan mounted off the core like the stock clutch fan. It is also necessary to hold the expansion tank if you are running the stock one.
rt turbo 04-18-2008, 01:28 PM Im talking about the pusher shroud.
pbonsalb 04-18-2008, 02:46 PM Either way, you have to mount it off the core. If you can fit the stock pusher fan shroud, you can fit the stock pusher fan. Why change it? It is a great fan. And if it fails, you should be able to buy a new motor for it for less than the cost of a Spal or similar quality aftermarket mini shroud fan.
rt turbo 04-18-2008, 03:16 PM I cannot keep it. I was asking if it is ok without the shroud because my IC is way too big to keep it there.

I'm lost...
pbonsalb 04-18-2008, 07:56 PM What about the cross brace? Did you cut it? Mine is cut and the aftermarket 16 inch pusher fan is on the AC condenser. Again, the fan is less efficient on the core with just its little minishroud. As another pointed out, it is better not to mount the fans exactly opposite upon one another, so offset each a bit if possible.
turnerNCM3 04-18-2008, 09:16 PM I ripped all that stuff out behind the kidneys and bumper. I have a 16 pusher there now and did not have to cut the cross piece that the OEM aux fan bolted too. My fan was thin enough and I made some bracket out of sheet alum. I'll get a pic up

cool, id like to check your car out sometime. who built your motor? Mines going to CES's builder. BUt the turbo is all DIY.
Matutino 04-19-2008, 06:42 PM Just finished installing thespal puller in place of the stock fan/fan clutch... it clears the SC crank pulley by nothing...

yeah, thats what im looking at. with a bigger radiator it would not fit.
