View Full Version : BMWACA events...who's going?
gilly 04-15-2008, 01:20 PM Just curious if anyone else will be attending any of these events this year at PIR http://bmwaca.motorsportreg.com/
I'm signed up for the May and August events. FTW

BraveUlysses 04-15-2008, 01:30 PM I was planning on attending a Cascade SCC driving day in September, but I've found BMWCCA instructors to be so much better that I'm considering attending one of these events instead.
I'm pumped to try the new surface at PIR, it looks amazing!

I would love to run that April event but I need to replace some of my bushings. I still might try and check it out depending on work.
I just don't have a car to track right now...
Did you sell your e90? I hope not...white is the best color for a track car :D
Ty Vil 04-15-2008, 06:57 PM No I have the E90 but it's leased and I don't want to write the check to BMW FS if something were to happen to it.
That and it's overweight/underpowered/not well setup for a track car.
In another year or so I'll have a dedicated track car. It's this time of the year I miss my yellow M3

Any ideas for the track rat?
I doubt I'll be participating this year, although last year was a great time for me and the car.

E30 or E36.
I just sold our E30 - that could've been a good start.

I was going to come and check it out on the 28th. I've always been a little leery of the club days since I'm new to track driving. I figured I'd come check the group out and as Brave mentioned, if the instructors are there, then maybe I'll sign up. My main concern was just not being sure there would be instructors available like you get with a more dedicated 'school'.
I've run two Cascade schools in the previous cars so my initial plan is to start there. My goal is two track days this year.

Hey Micheal, are you making it out to Packwood this weekend?

Did you mean BMWACA?

Well, all the different chapters are related to the National Club, so that's the term I use. I don't have any personal experience (yet) with BMWACA.

The BMWACA days at PIR are driving schools not just open track days. You are assigned to a class (novice...like me, intermediate and advanced) and you are assigned an instructor.
I am attending the April 28th event at PIR. It will be my first time on a road course.
Me too. Look forward to seeing you there. You don't happen to get your car serviced at AR do you? I know I've seen a red E46 M3 there.

I'm actually pretty sure BMWACA is an entity unto itself. The regional BMWCCA group is Pudget Sound. BMWACA is its own group but they will honor your BMWCCA membership for admission to their events.
What kind of E30 did you have? Was it in good shape? :shifty
Didn't you get upset with me awhile back for thread jacking? :shifty Something about adding me to your "ignore list"...of course, in that case, you're not reading this comment anyway. :D
BraveUlysses 04-16-2008, 01:07 PM ^Hmm, seems that you are right about the CCA/ACA thing. My apologies.

Ty can fill you in more on it but it was a late 325is white on black. Ty's father was the original owner, younger brother got hold of it and had seen better days last I was around it.

Nice! I tried signing up for the 4/28 event but it's been full for a while and the waiting list is very long. Hopefully the weather behaves :shifty

I am pre-registered for the May, Aug, and Sept BMWACA DEs - I play to try to make all of these, with the May track day being a maybe. If I can't get into the May 18th PCA DE (on a Sunday, which is preferable for me), I will be going to the May 19th BMWACA DE.
I just picked my car up from AR yesterday... Brian corner balanced and aligned my car. I have an EXACT 50/50 weight distribution corner to corner and left to right :D
After running PIR with blown rear shocks last summer, I now have TCK coilovers, Powerflex FCABs and RTABs, and GC RLCAs... I'm gonna make that track my bitch :evil2

Good to hear Matt! I'm 4th on the waiting list for the May 19th ACA event but all signed up for the Aug 25th ACA event.
Just curious how you were able to sign up for the PCA event on Sunday May 18th. I tried but it said I needed a PCA member number. Am I missing something?

I haven't actually signed up yet... I'm waiting until they open registration up to everyone and then I am going to try to get in. Hopefully it hasn't filled up yet!

Gotcha, that's what I'm planning on doing as well. Give me a heads up when you're getting ready to sign up. Any idea when they plan on opening registration to non members? I've read the event registration info on their site and still can't find the open registration date. :(
E D I T :
I just scrolled down and saw the calendar for registraton...I'm an idiot!
MyMach5 04-17-2008, 05:48 PM I heard the PCA is requiring a full inspection done by a certified shop if you want to participate in one of their PIR days. I know the guys at AR would do it but still that's just more $$$. I guess you have to pay to play. Have you guys heard the same?

i'm used to that... all the clubs back east required a full inspection by a certified shop.
you're in luck though... from www.arautoservice.net home page:
"Recent changes in insurance regulations have made annual tech inspections a mandatory item for all drivers who would like to participate at PCA Oregon HPDE days. AR Auto Service is now doing Porsche Club of America annual inspections for free!! Call us to schedule an appointment and we'll get you taken care of before the next track day! One less thing to worry about."

pdxbmw32 04-18-2008, 01:43 AM Hey Michael, are you making it out to Packwood this weekend?
My current plan is yes. Although I'm not so sure about running cones in the snow. :) Are you planning to go? I didn't see your name on the reg.

So, which instructors are you referring to that are "so much better"? The ones from BMWACA, which you say you have no experience with? Or, the ones from BMWCCA?

I was toying with the idea but the extreeeeeemly long drive and looming threat of snow made me decide to stay home.

I was referring to my experience with Cascade SCC being "okay" but really really enjoying the PSR BMWCCA instructors I've had so far.
No need to get bent out of shape :confused, I have nothing against the ACA and would like to participate in at least one of their events this year.
registered for the PCA DE at PIR on May 18th!
gilly 04-18-2008, 03:45 PM registered for the PCA DE at PIR on May 18th!
LAME! I realized last night that I'll still be in San Diego that Sunday for a wedding :mad
I'm still on the waiting list for the 5/19 ACA event though and will be signing up for the 6/22 PCA event. It's nice having these DE's on Sunday :alright

MyMach5,
I generally do my own work.
I see three E46 M3s often in Vancouver. One is Red and the others are silver. One of the silver cars has a big wing, louvers in the hood, and a different bumper cover.
I can't wait for the 28th. It will be my first time on the track at PIR.

I'm not bent out of shape. I just wanted to know who you were saying were so much better. The topic was about BMWACA. You made a statement about BMWCCA. Then you said they were all the same, which they aren't... sort of. Then you said you had no experience with BMWACA. Now you say you were talking about PSR BMWCCA. A little confusing, no?
Jay
pdxbmw32 04-19-2008, 02:14 AM When running in the novice class, is there any problem getting an instructor at BMWACA events?
I'd really like to have an instructor in the car for my first track day. I'm sure there are some bad fwd habits that I'll need to be breaking on the track.
-m.
MyMach5 04-19-2008, 01:20 PM My understanding is that everyone goes out on the track the first time with an instructor. Also, you go out one class at a time so the same instructors will be working will the drivers in all of the classes. I'm sure one of the reasons BMWACA limits the number of drivers is to ensure they have enough instructors. I have never done one of these events so this info is just what I've gathered by reading and talking to those who have.
soggydoo 04-19-2008, 05:48 PM how much is the track day?
gilly 04-20-2008, 01:40 PM $150 for a BMWACA track day

well, i'll likely be dropping my registration for the May BMWACA event - so that should give you a better chance of getting in :)
i plan on shooting for the 6/22 PCA event as well... i'm all for the sunday events!

Right with ya on that one. It's tough taking a day off when PCA is on the weekends. Hopefully I'll see you out there.
kiley 04-21-2008, 09:21 AM seeya there on 4/28, 5/19, 8/25...
... anyone have a line on the new big turn before back stretch (8?) that they like?
rad750 04-22-2008, 12:13 AM The new corner before the back straight appears to be wider on the high side/outside of the initial portion of the turn. Most of the cars used the new section of the corner to make the turn.
Will we use the chicane by the bleachers or will we bypass them with a longer front straight for the BMW ACA events?

Pretty sure BMWACA uses the chicane...at least they did last year. Speeds would be a lot higher going into T1 if they didn't. Def a safety issue.

It is kind of a tricky turn. if you're taking it in tight, you'll be slowing down to 2nd gear in the high revs (slow as turn 1), you better be easy on the throtle or you'll spin.
the other option of taking a wide turn at 3rd gear is only a little better, because if you're not taking is perfectly, your rev drop low, outside the power band, and then you exit the turn very slowly.
Here my recent footage from the last track day:

BTW, most club run the chicane

Nice video! Just curious, what group were you running in that day? Novice, intermediate etc...?
I didn't realize that new section was so wide :eyecrazy Looks nice and smooth...and a little banking too.
kiley 04-22-2008, 05:33 PM thanks! I did both last time I ran - important to set-up for that back straight - much faster now!
Going to lean towards a tight/2nd gear pull out for turn 8... 3rd just didn't feel right in my car, and keeping it wide was unsettling to the car... I might have made too much of a 90 degree turn with that though...

It was ALFA DE, and as always, they like do things in their own weird way.. they broke down the groups by motor/displacement, and the only faster group was the "race cars" according to the description. :rolleyes
I usually run Advanced, and this year I'll be also instructing.

Hmmm, by displacement...that's an intersting way of grouping.
Hopfully I'll be able to run advanced this year. Eventually I'd love to do some instructing. :alright
