View Full Version : How Much?
fedor23 04-14-2008, 05:24 PM I've found a 850ci, and I realy want to buy it, but don't want to turn out empty pocketed.
So how much would you give for a 1993 850ci, with 140,000 mileage, leaking power steering, which the power steering pump probably has to be changed because it makes a grinding noise when you turn(spin) the wheel, peeling paint on the trunk not authentic rims, brake linings have to be changed, power seats don't go back and forward. The car is candy red, also has a broken light in the back.
The good, it has a nice V12 engine, with a DINAN exhaust, leather is good, has stock radio, and CD changer, the color is nice candy red, the bad about the paint is it looks as though it has been painted on the front and sides of the car, but not roof and trunk.
How much do you think would be a fair price for this kind 850ci?

-High mileage, but not that bad if it has any kind of records with it.
-Leaky power steering stuff can be very expensive. If it's got to the point where there is grinding it probably needs a p/s pump plus replacing whatever is causing the leak (there are a number of known parts on the car that fail in that system, all of them expensive to buy and expensive to install...)
-Peeling paint may mean the rest of the car hasn't been taken car of either.
-Re-paint like that often means collision damage...
-Non-movement in power seats can be fixed. There is a DIY here (http://www.e31faq.com/), but also means the car may not have been maintained.
-So you can see the broken tail light or the on board computer is telling you there is a light out? Broken tail light combined with re-painted bumper is pointing towards rear-end damage again...
With no services records and obvious problems the car could be a headache waiting to happen...
I'm by no means the most experienced 8'er around, so stay tuned to see what other people add...

I carfaxed the car, and it doesn't have any accident report, it is a clean title, with 1 owner. p.s. the car is at an acution so they don't have any service records.
rockytt 04-14-2008, 09:02 PM Here's the potential problem with a car like this - let's say you get the car for $7k. You could easily spend triple that amount just getting her back into shape.
If everything were perfect I don't think you'd spend more than $12k or so - the $5k difference could be swallowed up w/o a trace.
Honestly, you could be looking at anything from a $4k parts car to something maybe worth $8k or so-not much more than that w/o a lot more info and an inspection.
My 2 cents only...
Koizumi 04-14-2008, 09:14 PM With E31, you get what you pay for. The more you spend upfront, the better. Most of us have dumped a minimum of $5k right off the bat (post-purchase) to get our cars up to snuff.
If you don't mind spending a lot of cash & wrenching yourself, then E31 is the way to go!
Cheers
