View Full Version : WTB Tinting Paint
e90dTm 04-14-2008, 04:28 PM I want to black out my tail lights on my e90. I don't like those blackline tails so I was just thinking of buying tinting paint but my problem is that I can't find any. Does any body know where I can get some? I was also wondering if it came in different colors like yellow (for the head lights)

either way, def. clear coat it
jhstealth 04-15-2008, 12:23 AM i used this hobby paint. It looks 10000000000 times better then the niteshade i used, its for tinting the windows of model cars but it works awsome on lights, i have it on my tails.

APXDDM 04-15-2008, 12:31 AM i can cut you a square of smoked film, and you can put it on your tails and cut off the excess. PM me if you want some
you can buy VHT niteshades from summit racing as well.
e90dTm 04-15-2008, 02:25 PM Thanks for the help guys
mikeyb74 04-15-2008, 02:30 PM I've always used a tinting spray paint from Testors. Its been along time since I've done it so I have forgotten the name of it.
XCELMotorsports 04-15-2008, 02:34 PM I like using the protective rubber thing, lots of companys make em but i know one personally called RockBlockers.
Great cause if you dont like em or get harassed by the police, you can easily peal em off.
Drone 04-15-2008, 02:38 PM Aye, nightshades tends to leave a red tint to the lights (only visible in direct sun...but VERY annoying) Testors transparent black doesn't have the same issue...although I've found if you don't clear coat it, after time it'll pick up a slight green tint. As for the headlights..it's technically illegal in most states to tint the whole light, i'd strongly suggest lamin-x for the headlights (20ish bucks)...cause if you do end up getting a "fix it" ticket for your headlights, you'll be out big bucks replacing lights (or be forced to risk a solvant)...
e90dTm 04-15-2008, 02:39 PM Is it like a vinyl you place to cover the outside of the lights? I was thinking about getting one of those but I don't want it to start pealing later.

Yeah true, I don't want to end up damaging and replacing my head lights. I'm not even going to mess with those any more, they're good the way they are now.
mikeyb74 04-15-2008, 02:50 PM In the current issue of Traction May/June 08 has a feature of a tuned 335i with smoked tails and headlamps. Looks hot!
m3mobbin 04-15-2008, 02:58 PM I've been using VHT smokeout spray for years on have sprayed dozens of lights. It's much better than any other type of spray on tint or self adhesive tint that I've used. If you don't have good results with it, your probably doing something wrong.

e90dTm 04-15-2008, 02:58 PM Yeah, I like the E92 tails more than the E90 tails

Drone 04-15-2008, 03:01 PM yea, lamin-x is a thick vinyl covering...it doesn't peal or look bad..and it's cheap, holds up to anything, protects the lights from rocks etc..there are zero down sides. I've had my set on for over a year, and I get comments on it all the time. They also make it for the rear...which may be a better option for you, as the tails for the e90 are also pricy :shifty
I just checked...the stuff is a bit more expensive for the e90 then for the e36..I'd suggest buying through habbie he can give ya all the info you need..or you can buy direct through lamin-x's site.
m3mobbin 04-15-2008, 03:33 PM I get it on ebay, it saves a bit to buy 2 cans.

m3mobbin 04-15-2008, 03:38 PM It does have downsides, installers don't get it perfectly even on both lights every time. It's hard as hell to install over contoured lights as it will pull up. You can see the line where it ends, and it gets scratched easily as it's really soft. I don't think you are supposed to polish it out either, which you can do with the spray on tints.
One of the main advantages is you can stick it to glass, where spray on will not work.

I'm probably going to get it from there too because each can costs up to $20 and I'm sure I'm going to need to use more than one can because I want to get my tails looking dark :buttrock
APXDDM 04-15-2008, 06:04 PM honestly, if youre not experienced with using rattle cans like m3mobbin, i would stay away from VHT. Its very tricky to use, especially for first timers. If I were you I would purchase charcoal lamin-x from lamin-x.com If you make a mistake simply peel it off, something you wouldnt be able to do with VHT. So give lamin-x a shot, if youre not satisfied with it, purchase VHT. Its better than ruining your taillights if you make a small mistake. You could also take your taillights to a bodyshop who can mix clearcoat and black paint and smoke your tails.
m3mobbin 04-15-2008, 06:22 PM LOL Marcus, If you mess up with the VHT you can just wipe it off. If it dries and you don't like it you can just wet sand it off and polish the lights off.
But you are right, for a newb Lamin-x is probably much easier depending on the shape of the light.

I agree, it can be wiped off easily before it dries. If some one is just learning how to smoke taillights i don't think it would be a good idea to be sanding and polishing if a mistake was made. (no offense to OP)
e90dTm 04-15-2008, 06:26 PM I'm experienced with using spray paint. It is just like spray paint, isn't it?

Lol no prob :)
APXDDM 04-15-2008, 06:29 PM Its a bit thin, and likes to run. Make sure you apply it with light coats, wet sand, and clear coat. I would ask M3mobbin, hes a god with that kind of stuff.
