So I picked up my 1984 733i. I got it for a steal, and is going to require less work than I expected, so I am pretty stoked.

It's got a M30/Auto, and SaphirBlau Metallic paint over a blue interior. She started up with about 5 minutes of charging on a jump with old gas. All the power equipment works as far as I could tell, except the driver's side power headrest and passenger side power windows.

Work she's going to need:

-New shift cable or adjustment (R is park, N is reverse, D is neutral, etc.)
-New shifter handle, knob is loose and trigger is stuck in the up position
-New exhaust from just infront of the cat pretty much all the way back
-New rotors/pads, current set up works, but must be pushed to the floor and is very bumpy
-Passenger side power windows fixed
-Driver's side head rest
-Driver's side rear headrest is split at seams
-Paint (Shotty paintjob last time around, it was a garage job, and is peeling off)
-Rust. There is a dime size bubble on the driver's side front 1/4 panel, a half dollar size bubble on passenger side front 1/4, and a dime size bubble in rear passenger side fender lip.

So I got a running, driving, virtually rust free car for a steal.

On to the crappy phone pictures. I left my camera at home when I went to pick it up, better pics to come.

Thanks guys. I hope the work ahead isn't too complicated. I think brakes an exhaust and it will pass state inspection.

Drive it up to Buffalo and I'll help you install the three month old Bosal cat back exhaust I took off my 833 733 parts car. Plus all the windows work, so I'd probably be able to fix those too.

$150 for exhaust either way if you're intersted.

What color head rest for the front? I have some blue ones. No rears though, in any color.

Might be able to fix the shifter also.

Well, in order to drive it to Buffalo, I'd have to get exhaust done on it and fix the brakes, too. The headrest is blue, but the headrest itself is fine, it just won't go up and down with the power button.

How much of the exhaust set up are you talking about? I need from the catalytic convertor back, maybe all the way up to the manifold, but I haven't checked that far up.

Thanks for the offers

Try this link:

http://www.bosalna.com/index.php?mod=catalog

If nothing shows up, it on Bosal dot com in the aftermarket exhaust section part number 289-963

From the cat back. One piece center and rear mufflers. There may also be a pic on Autozones site etc.

Edit: If you do have to replace the cat section, don't get ripped off if it's OEM. Sell that sucker and put the money into the car. I'm replacing mine with a Magnaflow cat section. I figure for $230 shipped for a new one, I'll give a shot.

Thanks. I may be getting in touch with you about that exhaust if this is the section you are talking about.

Nice one, Zack! (Pic 1) Is there something wrong with the hood or just not closed all the way?

Good Luck with her! :cool

It's not latched. That pic was 5 minutes after I jumpstarted it, kept it alive long enough to warm up and idle on it's own.

Thanks!

Well, I gave it a bath and took it for a spin through the neighborhood. With it's lack of exhaust, it sounds like a 6cyl. top fuel dragster.

I found some more problems. Front turn signals/parking lights don't work. NONE of the power windows work, and the speedo doesn't work. This thing could become a real nightmare, but damn is it pretty.

Make sure the switch by your right knee is not tripped. It's a window circuit breaker. If you get the drivers side working with that switch, then you can start troubleshooting the passenger side again. They may just need to cleaned up and regreased. Check the fuses also.
All the switches work?

Speedo could be the rechargable batteries inside the instrument cluster. If the battery has been dead for a while, give it a few days and see if the speedo wakes up. If it doesn't you may have to rip into the cluster and replace the batteries, check the SI board for bad traces or look elsewhere.

Are the park/turn bulbs good? Are they the silver base bulbs. These cars don't like the brass base ones. Do the rear lights work OK?

I have a drivers side mirror also.

Rear lights work, heads and high beams work, the parking lights are just very weak for some reason. I need to check that circuit breaker... is it that switch that when pressed on the bottom displays a "0"?

Oh and the mirror is getting the ol' JB weld and some paint later today.

Update, mirror is now on properly.

I bought a battery, and that only sprung new problems to my attention.

1. The speedo doesn't work.
2. The gauge lights are out
3. The blower motor doesn't work. No air comes from the vents on any setting.

I got the passenger side power window to work, but it needs some good lubrication. The driver's side power headrest is still doesn't function, but the motor still works. I also went to adjust the shift cable, got the selector in sync with the little lever on the tranny, but broke the damn cable when I went to tighten it. Oh well.

Ugh. This thing may be more of a pain than it's worth. It was cheap, but everytime I work on it more and more comes to my attention.

Speedo:
Could be the sender in the diff or wiring going to it.
Could be the SI board inside the cluster-bad connection, bad traces from leaky rechargable batteries, or the actual speedo could be broken.

If you get to the point of taking the cluster out to see what the SI borad and batteries look like, you can replace the gauge lights at that time. Unless you're talking about the idiot lights. Then we would need more info on which don't work and which do. Make sure the alt light works and goes out after the car is running or else your new battery will not charge.

The shifter cable isn't too much from the dealer. The hardest part for me is getting the rubber boot at the tunnel to seat correctly, not much space there.

Keep at it, once you get these things fixed, it's a lot of fun.

I have a good cluster also-BUT I may try it in my 735 to see if I can get all of the OBC functions back.

I still have the exhaust and window motors also!

Nice. If you have that exhaust for a while I'm interested. I can't find any cheaper than $273.xx not including shipping. Once I get that $150 saved up I'll be in touch. The two front windows are good (only ones I need), the passenger side just needs lubed up for some smoother operation.

I figure it's going to be a lot of tracking down all the electrical gremlins, but once it's all figured out, it will be a nice cruiser.

Getting the thing to Pass the PA State inspection so it can be a usable project.

1. Exhaust (I can do this)
2. Brakes (can do this, too)
3. Parking lights
4. Speedo
5. Gauge lights
6... everything else

Does your light switch get hot?

Zack01GC
04-30-2008, 12:26 PM
No, not that I've noticed.

The driver's side parking light works and is nice and bright, but I think the bulb is a dual filament and when i put the turn signal on, the dimmer filament lights up. It is on the bright one for the hazards, too.
