For a 1999 740il, without factory GPS, and the CD changer in the trunk, what are my third party options?
I'd like to add an in-dash GPS, what unit will fit if anyone has tried it? I assume that these new units also play CD's, so I don't have to go to the trunk.
If in dash won't work, at least I'd like a nice in dash CD changer so I don't have to go to the trunk - any ideas on what is compatible?

any single DIN flip out nav screen will fit in the cassette opening. IMO aftermarket nav just looks out of place in these car. I have a 99 as well and I retrofitted factory nav into mine.

If you're gonna upgrade...why not become current and go with MP3 or iPod.
If you do...you can keep the interior of the car looking pretty much BMW standard by upgrading to a BMW CD43 single in-dash CD/radio. By you having a 1999 model...you are luckier than those of us that have 1995-1998 models...you already have the I-bus CD data cable and changer in the trunk.
Although you want to get rid of the trunk changer...the CD43 unit would provide you 6 CDs in the trunk plus the single CD access up front...and you would retain all controls from the MID & steering wheel. You could even do this in progression if you don't have the funds to go completely iPod/MP3, yet. The BMW CD43 is complete plug-n-play with your model year...so you can purchase one and continue on as normal. Then when you have the funds for the DICE/iPod/MP3 upgrade...you can switch over at that time to the newer technology.
The CD43 would also allow you "chuck-the-changer" and hook up an iPod or other MP3 player using the CD changer connection on the back of the head unit. There are lots of write-ups and information on forums and websites on how to install DICE units and other devices to upgrade to this type of set up. Which in the long run would be simpler since that is the way technology is going (well, really it's already gone there) ;)
Here's some pics of a CD43 head unit installed in an e38...only difference is this guy doesn't have the DSP control unit. The cover for the radio head unit will close over the radio's VOLUME knob...so again there's no problem at all installing this head unit in an e38:
