View Full Version : Angel Eye brightness issue

Ok, so I have DDM Depos, 6k HID, and MyCARR angel eyes pre-installed. I'm in the middle of installing them and just got the second DEPO into the car. The angel eyes are wired into a 12v switched source, so they come on as soon as the ignition is enabled (this is the same switched source for the relay to my electric fan), tapped right into the fuse panel.

The problem is, while all 4 halos light up... 1 is really bright, and the others not so much.

Anyone run into this issue?

Ok, it's wierd... with the car turned off, one of the rings is brighter than the others... sometimes two are brighter. But with the engine running, all halos are the same.

Ok, so what does that mean? I have a newer battery (5 months?), so... I don't know.

Checked all the connections to the angel eyes?

Crimped and taped correctly?

could also be that some are having trouble lighting up, would be a connection issue, but once they are all on and running they are fine?

I haven't taken the lights apart, no. They were pre-assembled by DDM.

Yeah, once up and running, everything is fine. When the car isn't running, they sometimes come on full, then two or three will drop down to half power. Not really sure whats going on.

Eh, personally I wouldn't worry about it if they all work fine with the car running. Are you wiring up the remote relay thing too so they fade on/off when you lock/unlock the car?

Not sure, like I said it came pre-wired from DDM, all I had to do was connect the white wire to a 12v source. I'm assuming it's not, however. I can't really tell, since it's hard to turn the key and run around to the front of the car before they come on. :D

It's not then, you would have had to do that yourself, since it involves some extra wiring under the hood (not something they can preinstall).

I installed my kit myself and i get the same thing. but it doesn't really bother me that much since all the rings will light up to full brightness when i turn the car on.

Try tapping them into your parking light wires.

Try tapping them into your parking light wires.

I could do that, but then I'd have to turn the parking lights on. Nah, I think it's something to do with low amperage when the car isn't on. Once they are all on and warm, I can turn the car off and they all stay lit, so it's something to do with the initial power on.

I'm more concerned about the foggy lenses. Gonna park with the nose in the sun tomorrow and leave the back caps off while I'm at work, that should clear them up. :D

Ok, starting to get frustrated. I got to work this morning and only three halos are working. WTF.

Is there a trick to taking apart Depos? Looks like they just clip together, is there any silicon that requires baking?

The car HAS to be running for all the halos to be working and at full brightness. No baking, just cut the silicon around the inside lenses. Was the car running when only 3 halos worked? If so, check your connections, otherwise take out the bad ring, then take the ring out from the plastic ring holder, and look for a crack or blackness at the top of each ring where the wires connect.

No. :rolleyes

Ah, fooooook it. Stupid Mondays, I have the Monday Morning Stupids :mad

Ok, so the outside lens is just clipped on? Thats good, I may need to remove them to clean the condensation out.

God I love how these look on my car, with smoked corners. :D

What is the “no” for? It didn't seem like you had your question answered, and since I have had a set on every BMW I owned, I have a good amount of experience with them. Whatever.

Sorry, for some reason I saw "Was the car running?"

Thats what the No was for. :D

You have smoked corners now too? I think it's time for you to give us a picture update of your car... :shifty

Yep. I finished at 8pm last night, I couldn't get a good picture to turn out. Besides, the lenses were all fogged. I'll get some tonight. :D

Try wiring into your fuse box. There's a writeup in the E36 section I bumped. My AEs work fine when it's not too cold out.

It may be your wiring is not completely solid. Mine are simply tap-in + plastic connectors + electrical tape (and they work fine when it's not too cold or after they've warmed up--rain or shine).

I had the exact same problem with my DDM's, what i did, is i cut the angel eye wires where the black connectors are that go into the inverter, and i soldered the wires together. Fixed everything, they all come on and warm up quickly.

shoot me a PM if you have any questions about it.

dam this exact thing is going on with my ddm as well...To start of one of my tabs were broken straight out of the box and then those pins in the back kept slipping in. when I finally got them to work one of the halos where brighter then the others and now both angel eyes on my left side dont work at all..has anyone used the their warranty yet? IM giving them a call tomorrow.....

I need to figure out a way of getting my fuse panel cover off, stupid torx screws are half out in the back, but stripped. Unaccessable as all hell! I'll fiddle with it over the weekend, should be able to get somewhere with it.

I'll also check the AE wiring in the headlight bucket itself, since I want to remove them and get it all adjusted properly for gaps (those plastic bolt thingies suck). Then I have to aim them... or just keep blinding people. :evil2
