Would the CEL come on with a problem with the tranny? This may be a silly question but if it comes on because the gas cap is not on, then I guess it could come on with anything.
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks No, transmission problems usually give you a check control indication (these show up on the OBC display). If there is a serious problem with the transmission it will go into "Trans Fail Prog" mode. SergeBMW 04-13-2008, 01:05 PM Stupid tranny on my car decided to be stupider and go into a complete and catastrophic failure and WHEN I neded that trans program fail mode, it never ever came on, I came home BARELY, but oh but has it come on before for no reasons at all, sorry just had to let some out :) ettore38 04-14-2008, 03:24 PM Hi, Just recently I had a problem with my tranny neutral safety switch. The tranny couldn't determine which gear it was in (neutral, reverse and gears 1-2). My check engine light DID come on (and go off) because of this. When I would put the tranny in reverse, nothing would happen. When I put it in neutral the CEL came on and the "Trans. failsafe prog" warning. After a few restarts the CEL would go off then come on again when changing gears. So yes, the CEL will come on with some tranny issues and for just about anything else really. I bet if you sneeze in a specific way it can trigger the CEL. I had NEVER seen a CEL until I got this car. It freaked me out until it became so common it doesn't even phase me now. :rolleyes ettore38 magic 04-14-2008, 04:26 PM My CEL is still on and the OBD reader says there is no code and everything is OK. So now I have ordered a Peake Research code reader and hopefully it will tell me something. Chief Jimbo 04-14-2008, 06:27 PM When my trans went I had a CEL that would not go off. After I fixed the trans the CEL was able to be reset. I have the Peake tool also and it would not give me any codes and I could not reset the CEL until I rebuilt the Trans. What kind of trans problems are you having? magic 04-14-2008, 06:48 PM My CEL went off just now. I do not know why. I noticed that when I release the accelerator pedal, the gas consumption needle would go up as the gears shift down before it comes back to zero. This happens even when I use the brakes to slow down considerably. I only started noticing this when I got worried about the CEL and start looking around. ettore38 04-15-2008, 11:49 AM Hi, The gas needle thing happens to me too. It's likely that on a downshift the rpm rises a little which temporarily makes the fuel economy worse. My car has always done that so it must be normal. ettore |
