View Full Version : BMW has changed a Teens life!
alchemist007 04-12-2008, 10:16 AM A few days ago my father had said he wanted to buy a car for me.
We had agreed on a Honda Civic Hybrid.
I'm an environmentalist and so I don't like big expensive gas guzzlers.
My dad is the complete opposite. He just even recently bought a Lexus SUV V10 engine. =(
So we were on the way to the Honda Dealer and we see Baltimore BMW on the way. My dad just couldn't resist stopping at BMW and taking a peak. I tried to convince him not to get it. Then he forced me to test drive.
This is where everything changed!!!
It was AMAZING! The best car I have ever driven. 230 horses revving and I was all in control :evil2 We even took a turn at 45 miles an hour and I had no loss in control. The power was unbeleivable!! I felt like I was in a rocket or something.
Well, So we decided to buy the car and I take back all I said about cars before. I cant wait to get it and drive it around the mountains.

I find this whole thing somewhat disturbing. You had originally chosen a great car for some good reasons and he just shoved you into that BMW.
I drove a flying piece of shiat(brown 1975 Toyota Corona Station wagon) that I had to work summers to pay for. When the tranny broke I had to fix it my-self. In fact my dad told me that I had 2 weeks to fix it or he would call the wrecker to tow it away. I drove that bomb through college and my first year out. My second car was a 1972 Datsun mini-truck. I purchased my first Datsun 240Z and began my track/autocross experience while I drove the mini truck as my DD. It was many years before I owned a nice DD car. I STILL have the first Datsun 240Z. In fact I have never wrecked a car on the street in my life. I still own several of my early sports cars.
The difference here is that I actually learned how to maintain my car. I learned the VALUE of a functioning vehicle. I also learned how to take CARE of my vehicles(even though you would consider them crap). You will have no opportunity to do so in that Warrantied BMW. Please tell your father I have no respect for him at all. Only an idiot would do such a thing to his son.
shifterkart33 04-12-2008, 10:33 AM Does anyone have any tips for me???
Yes, thank your dad for being so generous.
I'm sure many folks here will say your being spoiled, but if I had the money to put my son in a safe car like a new BMW, I'd do it in a heart beat.
Now, go to a driving school, do some autox's, have fun, and be safe.

Ah, lexus (nor toyota) do not make a V10 The 5.7 liter motor is a v8 in most topend trucks and SUVs
Pat533i 04-12-2008, 10:45 AM Congrats on not getting a automatic like every other spoiled kid that gets a bmw from their parents. Have fun but don't be stupid.
thekurgan 04-12-2008, 11:17 AM Yeah, don't do something stupid like this moron:

Yes, stay at home until you're 40 and sponge off your parents!

chaz13 04-12-2008, 03:33 PM Congratulations, and good for you. Pay no mind to jealous people that aren't as fortunate as you are. That is a great car and more importantly for someone your age a safe car. Just be careful and don't do anything stupid. Doing 100 mph to impress your friends can get you or someone else killed. I had a friend whose brother had a mustang at 21 and was drinking and showing off how fast his car was. He couldn't stop fast enough and crashed it, killing his best friend. Don't think it can't happen to you. I have another good friend in the state penitentiary that was drinking and driving and killed the passenger while he walked away fine. Now he has 4-8 yrs. to think about it in the big house, and probably for the rest of his life. I'm not saying don't have fun, in fact have a blast in your new car, just use good judgment. Good luck.
GreenThree 04-12-2008, 04:52 PM LOL. My first car was a 2WD pickup!
Congrats. BE SAFE OUT THERE.
psucelticXI 04-12-2008, 05:20 PM Perfect choice on the color!! Post some pics..

What is your point in announcing this to us? All you have accomplished is saying "Every body look at me!!! My daddy bought me an expensive car". If you want to ask a question, ask it. Don't bother telling us how young your are, we DON'T CARE. Most of us on here actually worked for our cars, I have the money and the means to buy my kids BMWs, Porsches but I refuse to do so, I will let them earn their money not handing it to them.
By the way, what is your GPA and school, I would like to know what you would be driving if daddy is not around.

Hello "trueblue":
Not to take anything away from hard times. In grad school, there were times I had to choose between the cat food and the real tuna. Oh, my school was UNM and, picking at random, my EE degree GPA was 3.97. My graduate GPA in plasma physics was 4.0.
My "daddy" is not around and in fact I am close to retirement myself. That same "daddy" did no more than convince me to leave home at 0800 on the morning I turned 18. For that I thank him!!!
Still, it gave me some pleasure to pick up a used 540i for the youngest spawn to take his first day of High School. Now, if he can just get it away from me...
Not everybody repeats their past.
mryakan 04-13-2008, 01:42 AM BTW Does anyone have any tips for me???
Oh and what do you think about the CAR I got.
Was it a GOOD BUY??
Yeah here is some advice, don't get into any accidents and don't brag to much, they both can cause bloody noses.
As for the good buy questions, are you kidding me? Your dad bought it for you, who gives a hoot. Whether you are a spoilt brat or a good boy who deserves it is none of my business, but you have such a car at 17, go enjoy it and stop asking stupid questions.
Oh and regarding your environmentalist quote, you are learning a good lesson at 17, see remember this when you ask yourself why people who go into power get corrupt and forget their ideals, its a funny thing how ideals change with convenience, and it is not age specific. Please don't take this as an offense, just an observation.
SocratesBMW 04-13-2008, 10:20 PM While I don't usually rag on people for people buying their kids nice cars if they can, I saw the down side of it today. My E92 335 is in the body shop and I stopped to get some food in my rental which is a Toyota Corolla. When I was getting into my car there were 3 girls, probably 17 at most getting out of their Cayenne S and one of them actually said "omg, that guy is driving a Corrola" and they all giggled. I can only imagine how tolerant they are of people not as forutnate as them in school or in life overall. It just makes me hope that they get a real dose of reality someday when someone knocks them down a few pegs. Only then can people, especially fortunate kids, can really appreciate what they have.

First Congratulations on the new car. Last year I bought my BMW 2007 328I convertible Montego blue with beige interrior. This is my first BMW and my only regret was that I did not do this when I was younger. Enjoy and be safe. :buttrock
Beer Goggles 04-14-2008, 12:48 PM Drive safe, I would have died if I had a car with that power and RWD when I was first driving.
I love "environmental" purchase. Hybrids are good for MPG, but what you do with all the toxic batteries in 8 years? Ahhh nobody wants to think about that. I call it misdirection environmental thinking. If I transfer the debt to a later date I feel better.

Exactly. The problem is that by giving kids a life of luxury you cannot teach them the value of money. If you don't know in your bones what it takes to make a good living then you are doomed to mismanage your money and end up being taken advantage of or never being able to make a stable living.
In the end, it is the rich kids that suffer the most.
DoublinUp 04-14-2008, 03:01 PM i remember in high school a girl got a BRAND NEW 328 and 2 months later it got repo'd from the parking lot at school..haha.
siggyfreud 04-14-2008, 03:08 PM Congrats and consider yourself lucky :).
As mentioned, ignore the jealous people here. You'll find these forums are plagued with asshats and unfortunately, they give BMW drivers a bad rep. Since you enjoy driving it so much, use it as motivation to work hard at education so that in a few years you can afford to upgrade to something with even more power. That 230hp will be fun for awhile, but eventually it'll wear off and you'll need more.
Now . . . DrRT is taking hug donations as he didn't get enough as a child . . . any takers?
Beer Goggles 04-14-2008, 03:12 PM Lots of people are just talking about values. I feel the same way. If you don't have a kid that has to work for what he gets...then there is no life lesson.
trek1500 04-14-2008, 04:29 PM I wonder if this kid is for real or whether this is a "genuine" post...Maybe it was posted here to see what kind of response it would get from regulars like me who frequent this forum on a daily basis. It's hard for me to believe that a father would "spoil" his son to such a degree by buying him a car worth over 40K! For one thing..it would definitely create a gap between him and many of his friends...assuming they all don't have rich dads who buy them high end sports sedans. I guess I'm with the majority in here in that 17 IMHO is much too young for someone to be driving a brand new BMW..my thought is...the father must have been buying it for himself...hopefully.
I think a young person should learn the values of hard work...whether it be academically or in other ways..and to be given a car like this seems a bit extreme. But that's just my opinion. When I was 17 I was driving a "beater" and working part time jobs here and there to put myself through school. I saved my money over the years and when I was finally able to get the "car of my dreams"..it meant much more to me..I know that sounds sappy and all but it's true...I think many of us went down that same road.
My advice to you young man is to value this car and treat it with respect. It's a great car and hopefully you will let a bit of "humility" temper your excitement. Enjoy it and be careful...

Likewise. My first car was a 10-year old piece of shit Corolla. My second and even third cars were also pieces of crap junk. Talking about humility and asking this kid to value the car, etc, goes nowhere. Nobody feels the value of something until he/she has to earn it, period. The kid will take the car for granted, as this is human nature, until one day he realizes the next BMW will take years of hard work to earn. Either than or he inherits millions from rich dad, gets on drugs, hookers and booze and ends up in rehab.

Thus you are wrong. and this post is geniuine. The only discrepency is the Aluminum/Black burl walnt wood.
I was wrong that I got aluminuim. In actuality It turns out I have burl wood in my car.

Now, just imagine the bunch of psychiatric issues those kids will have in 15 years. There's nothing wrong with rich parents getting their kids BMWs, or Porsche Cayennes, but when they start giggling at people with lesser cars you now know the damage spoiling kids can do. Do we really need more Britney Spears' and Paris Hiltons ?

...and posting an interior pick of a different car!
But seriously, all of you b**ching about how you had to wade 20 miles through three foot snow barefoot every day to work from the age of 2 onwards, and weren't ever even allowed to go to school, get a life!
Why the HELL shouldn't parents get their kids proper cars if they can? Why the HELL is a new 328i not suitable for a younger person?
Some people can't buy their kids anything, some can buy lots of things. Too bad if you are super bitter, but many people have worked hard to be able to have a comfortable life, and many of those are kind enough to care about their children.
I guess since several generations ago some people didn't even have enough to eat while growing up and having intact shoes was a luxury, no-one should feed their kids enough or give them new shoes just so that they don't become...well...I don't even understand what horrible thing you are saying will happen to a 17 year old that gets a new car??
You guys are embarrassing haters, and have no heart. I feel sorry for your kids, I hope you are happy driving a bimmer while they drive dangerous beaters if anything, I hope you remember to rub their face in it too. Hopefully you will remember to make them live in a really crappy, specially made shack-like extension to your house with the exact living conditions of your miserable youth. Remember not to give them modern medecine or let doctors use today's knowledge when treating your kids, they might grow up to be spoiled monsters!!!!

Spoling is not caring, not spending time with them and not teaching them manners. Also, young people ALWAYS have and always will do stupid things in groups. That's just the way it is. Do you think that some rednecks getting out of a beat up old Camaro would be any more compassionate or polite?
How telling that first people here complain that a kid is spoiled and an asshole because he is young and has a nice car of a certain price class, and then RIGHT AWAY talk about how wrong it is to judge a person on what they drive... Pathetic.
mryakan 04-15-2008, 05:41 PM Guys seriously can this thread be any more offtopic. Sorry to the OP, but it is closed. You can post a new thread but avoid including your age or dad comments as an advice, it seems to create too much tension. Keep it about the car not about you, this is not myspace.
