Seems to like it ok, no leaks or anything, but that depends on previous maintenance. slocar 04-11-2008, 05:40 PM cooking oil ... madis28 04-11-2008, 05:49 PM Mobil, although BMW recommends Castrol Blitzkrieg Bob 04-11-2008, 05:56 PM Astroglide:D cant hit bombz 04-11-2008, 05:57 PM ^ goes for high viscosity:D E34N 04-11-2008, 06:01 PM Astroglide:D that's water based... Full synthetic, same car, and tranny. I live in a much warmer climate tho, i should've gotten something thicker. tonyroc14 04-11-2008, 06:22 PM what about that royal purple 85w-140 that that sti guy used? should be thick enough to quiet down noisy lifters. thats like molases m60b30530i 04-11-2008, 06:22 PM what about that royal purple 85w-140 that that sti guy used? should be thick enough to quiet down noisy lifters. yup and blow up your engine :cool thats so thick im surprised it comes out of the bottle shrike071 04-11-2008, 06:27 PM M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40. It's got a premium additive package that is better than the standard M1. Death Trap 04-11-2008, 07:04 PM We use a few different oils in the cars we maintain. I reccomend Lucus products or Valvoline depending on miles and condition of the motor. CleanE34 04-11-2008, 07:06 PM i'm gonna start using royal purple. cars been sitting for a while so it definatly needs a oil change pronto. Qsilver7 04-11-2008, 07:07 PM Gee...that question has been asked since..... :rolleyes BTW...BMW recommends more than just Castrol now. ;) There is an Oil Viscosity Chart in your owners manual as well if you choose to use something conventional...or another weight...pay attention to the temperature charts. http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/q/original/e34%20Engine%20Oil%20Viscosity.jpg For example...this is the oil viscosity chart in my e34 which has the M50TU engine: http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/q/original/E34%20Oil%20Spec%20Chart%20M50TU.jpg dovstar 04-11-2008, 08:05 PM Astroglide:D The kind that warms up? WolfStrong 04-11-2008, 10:46 PM I use the oil from the dealership which is basically 15w40 Castrol oil along with the factory oil and air filter. All in all, it costs me roughly $25 to do an oil change with my discount. Seeing how it is so cheap, I just change it every 4-5k miles and the car runs completely smooth with no signs of sludge. ringle 04-11-2008, 10:49 PM Lubro Moly 10W60 ThoreauHD 04-11-2008, 11:18 PM For a V8, I do amsoil 5w-40. If you use a straight 6 you can get away with 5w-30. I noticed that 10w-40 was way too heavy... believe it or not. Amsoil, Lubro Moly, Royal Purple, and Redline(if they make the right viscosity) are good synthetics. I use amsoil for the engine and redline for the transmission/radiator/etc. Smeg 04-12-2008, 12:39 AM Dead dino all the way. auto da fe 04-12-2008, 02:40 AM As per the viscosity chart in the owner's manual, 15w40. Presently Castrol Truck and SUV synthetic blend. Russellc 04-12-2008, 07:43 AM Castrol Syntec. Mostly 5w40 and 5w50. Have made a brew of 3 quarts 10w40 and 5w50 once or twice. The car seem to like it. No cold start rattle like you can get with heavier oils. I get a cold start rattle with any 10wX or higher oils in the winter. I know, just use the 5w40 or 5w50. Just playing :) |
