I have been trying to read as much as I can about replacement headlights for the E36 series and am not sure what to buy. Below are some things I think are correct and some questions and would appreciate if someone could correct my statements/provide answers. The lights would be for a 98 M3 convertible and I am looking for everything pre-installed in the headlight so it would be plug-n-play:

1. Installing 35w or 55w HIDs may or may not throw a low-beam failure and it can happen anytime (i.e., right after installation to weeks/months later).

2. I have heard there are ways to correct the HID low-beam failure (read the LBF fix), but I would only want a solution that would not require cutting, splicing, etc. (i.e., just plug something in). I saw one kit (not complete headlight) had a LBF eliminator that appeared to just plug-in.

3. For HIDs I believe you need to change a fuse, so my question is if there is a risk shorting the eletrical system (or some other problem)?

4. HIDs require the ballast to be mounted somewhere in the car, usually behind the bumper or under the bumper mount. What works best to secure them - heavy-duty double-sided tape?

5. I thought I came across a thread mentioning a problem fitting the headlights, ballasts or something on the passenger side due to the factory alarm. Is this an issue? Any other similar mounting problems?

6. I am interested in Angel Eyes but it sounds as if you need to splice into the corner lights (or some other factory wiring) to power them. Is this correct? No other non-splice plug-n-play option?

7. If I got replacement headlights (DEPOs, Gen4, etc.) with the standard halogen bulbs I am guessing there is not an issue with low-beam failure. Would it also be correct to say that no fuses would need to be changed and therefore the load on the electrical system would be the same as stock?

8. Do halogen projectors provide significantly better lighting than stock?

9. Are the HIDs difficult to adjust the beam properly (and I guess this can apply to halogen replacements)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jay

4. Bumper support rail is the cleanest place to mount the ballasts IMO, velcro with the self adhesive backing works great but 3M double stick also works fine. Make sure you clean the mounting surface off before you stick the ballasts on.
5. You may need to relocated the alarm horn, it's not a bid deal at all, one bolt and it's off.
6.Angel eye splicing is as easy it gets, the included splice taps make for really simple connection of the angle eye wire to the corner light power. No tools required.
7.No replacement fuses necessary.
8. No, DEPO's with halogen bulbs have pretty lousy output, it's only marginally if not any better than OEM headlights.
9. No, it isn't difficult to adjust the lighting direction with DEPO's, I believe the only tool you need is an Allen wrench.
