View Full Version : Transmission and Motor / Engine Mounts
Staehling 04-11-2008, 12:56 PM Going to be tackling these soon...I think I've compiled enough DIY instructions from various sources to do it, but if anyone has any tips or tricks or official guide, much appreciated!
Cheers,

Koizumi 04-11-2008, 01:05 PM Careful when you lift the engine block. Lift it just enough to swap out the engine mounts.
Staehling 04-11-2008, 01:07 PM Thanks for the reply, Koizumi—I intend on detaching fan shroud, air intakes, and lifting slow and careful!
cheers
NickF 04-12-2008, 08:02 AM Hi Staehling, I need to do the same can you let me know how you get on please? Nick
Staehling 04-12-2008, 12:49 PM Absolutely. Getting the tran mounts today, motor mounts mid-week, should be tackling next weekend at the latest
Staehling 04-21-2008, 07:32 PM Well, did the motor mounts today. Took a while as it was my first time.
Went like this...
1 - Raise car, place on jackstands.
2 - Remove air filter housings and detach/loosen fan shroud.
3 - Remove bottom motor mount nuts, both easy.
4 - Remove top mount nuts, pass.side easy, driver side annoying.
5 - Jack engine up with piece of wood in between jack and oil pan.
6 - R+R pass. motor mount, tough with alternator in the way.
7 - R+R driver motor mount, not bad once vent tube thing removed.
8 - Slowly lower engine, had to start driver side top mount nut to ensure lining up.
9 - Put everything back together.
Will take for drive soon...seems to vibrate less at idle already which is good.
cheers
RevmasterT 04-22-2008, 10:54 PM I think you got # 6 and # 7 mixed up the alternator is on the drivers side. The drivers side engine mount is the one that's a PITA to change.

Staehling 04-22-2008, 11:24 PM Wish that were the case, but this is a JSpec with 2 alternators, and the pass. side one made the driver's side one look like the easiest thing in the world!
Toy72 04-23-2008, 06:19 AM Man, am I looking forward to doing this...:rolleyes
Staehling 04-29-2008, 08:52 PM Tranny mounts done, and I'm ecstatic with the results!
Not the quickest/easiest job, as the upper tranny mount nuts are indeed a bee-itch.
But my driveline vibration is all but gone, and the weird noise I had on hard left turns has disappeared too! Time for a beer, my hands feel like ground beef.
:)
Toy72 04-30-2008, 04:32 AM Congrats, and a well deserved beer:drink1

carspainc.com 05-21-2008, 05:17 PM i am going to be doing this too:rolleyes, i guess
how can i find out if the mounts have dropped?
TxGR8White 05-21-2008, 05:36 PM it's alot easier if you do it like this ------->
Staehling 05-21-2008, 05:52 PM Indeed! Jeepers...

Old engine mounts will sometimes leak some goop of sorts from the rubber. Basically, if you've never changed them, you need too.

Or this....... :D

hmmm... i am going to check for goop...
how about a way of measuring the stuff...
is there a certain height the mounts should have?
( i know, if it is 2 inch then i need to replace them...lol)
Staehling 05-22-2008, 08:57 PM Are you doing the work yourself or having a shop do it?
I ask because you could probably get a set of motor mounts AND tranny mounts for not much more than $100....

i did it on my 5 series...and everyone said it's real easy.
it was torture in real.
soooooo... here everyone said it's torture.
and i can't wait to get my hands all cut up again.
Staehling 05-22-2008, 09:07 PM It's not something you want to try to rush through, just set aside the time and buy OEM/Meyle parts, and you'll be good. Be thankful you don't have the 2nd alternator!
