Buy used.
Any one will essentially do the same, so you're down to price and looks.
Find a used Dinan one!

Along with the endless question about putting angel eyes on, pretty much.

Well, on the topic of CAI's, is the Bavarian Autosport one pretty good for the 540i, or does the stock box really flow that well?

The stock flows well and is basically a cai design. 90% of the "cold air intakes" that i've seen are actually hot air intakes. Which is exactly what you don't want.

Yep... you already have one on there.

OEM intake evaluation---
cost: free.
Performance: +4 hp over aftermarket aluminum tubes.
Result: Win/Win

on my turbo weasel i have decided to modify stock and add a cold air feed to the stock box. ill put pics up when i start in the next few weeks.
ON another note, how does everyone rate k&n panel filters over stock.

I know the stock intake is best for performance but is there something we can do to make it sound a little less... quiet?

I think the general consensus is that any reusable filter lets through more particulate than the stock disposable one and thus stock is better.

There is an article here (http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/Air_filter.htm)that discusses the issue

I know the stock intake is best for performance but is there something we can do to make it sound a little less... quiet?

As for making more noise I would work the exhaust system to achieve that, not the intake

Put a less restrictive filter in it.

You have a lot of options in that department. You can do the old drill holes trick. That will for sure increase the sound level. I actually am planning to cut most of the bottom right side of my airbox (the side away from the engine) off and create some sort of more comprehensive heat shield. Thats going to make it a lot louder without compromising performance. So basically anything you can do to disrupt or increase the flow of air coming into the airbox will make it louder.

to make it louder
gut hte airbox of any internal snorkels etc, they are generally only added to deaden sound
likewise remove any fancy inlets into the airbox and replace with a nice cold feed if possible
this is probably the cheapest/best performance/best noise compromise
to make it as loud as possible remove as much lower airbox as possible (allows more heat in though negating any cold feed benefits)

for hte loudest option connect some tubing to the maf, run the tube into hte cockpit, as close tpo your ear as possible
