View Full Version : Gotta vent...went to visit my car at the bodyshop today

I saw the car at the body shop today...it was apparently ready for me to pick up. The paint looked good (passenger fender a smidge bright under flourescent) but they insisted that the foglights didn't fit the MTech bumper. They had simply wrapped the fog light wires around the opening. :rofl

After moving my eyes from the gaping holes where the fogs should be, I saw lots of the black gasket underneath the nosepanel on the passenger side (the driver's was fine). I knew that the gasket wasn't supposed to be visible. I also saw that the fender liner wasn't even remotely close to being attached to the bumper or whatever...there was at least a centimeter of gap. Thanks for the explanation on the rail thingy, Mac...the body guy said that they were different between the two bumpers.

Following the excellent advice I got from this board, I told them that the fogs were apparently easier to put in when the cover was on. I drove the car into the shop (immediately getting the F/FOG LIGHT warning).

My front bumper was about to be tossed into the scrap heap, with the driver's projector fog and front plate delete still there!!! Damn I was not happy. I grabbed the good passenger fog and crawled under the car. Put the fog on in less than a minute! They felt pretty stupid. :stickoutt

One thing neither of us could figure out is where the temperature probe goes on the M5 bumper. It's on the driver's side next to the foglight. I'll make the shop figure that one out.

I also noticed that the Euro trim on the front was all scraped up. They had used the Euro trim (that was very beat) from the M5 bumper on the driver's side, and the piece that got scraped up from the crash on the passenger side! I told the parts guy two weeks ago that it was Euro trim; he can't give my VIN and get the right trim...he sounded surprised when the trim he got had the cutout for the light. :rolleyes

I asked him where the new OE passenger fog was...he had sent it back to Dreyer & Reinbold BMW since it wouldn't fit! So now we wait for the fog to come back, and a new Euro trim piece to get here.

I'm just a bit pissed that they were going to short me two fogs and not compensate me at all...:mad

The back bumper needed A LOT of work go get right. It was beat and had coats of different paint over the years, and heavy gouges and scratches. With that said, they charged $517 for paint and install. I'm a bit pissed that they charged for install as I had to press in the leading corners at the top in the wheel well.

Also, the bottom center of the back bumper sags a bit...it's noticeable in the towhook cover area as it's not 100% tight. There are about 6 clips (no clue of what they clip onto) and all but the one next to the tow hook cover is broken. I may have to ziptie that but hope it will hold. That one is not the bodyshop's responsibility.

I'll get pictures tomorrow. I'm going to pick up the car as it is and keep it until Tuesday, when the parts come in. Then into another Mazda 3i for a day...

Last thing: The MTech kit looks killer. :)

the temp sensor probe goes into the duct on the passenger side, on an m5 at least. Drivers side feeds the alternator cooling duct.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll be sure to snap some pics tomorrow. Colormatched lowers was a good choice.

Really? On the non-M car the temperature probe is on the driver's side next to the foglight, and the M cars have a temp sensor on the passenger's side?

Damn...I guess I'll just ziptie the temp sensor next to the foglight near the area where it was before...hopefully it will be okay.

Thanks for the info!

Hey congrats man, I bet it looks killer! When I had to repair my fender bender I wanted an M5 cover but couldn't find one in time, so I'm jealous of yours haha.

About the temp sensor, yeah it was hard for me to fit mine into the reciever, so I wound up ziptie-ing it to the fog light bracket; should work fine.

Sorry about the whole fog mix-up I'm glad it's all working out now. :redspot

(Waiting for pics :D)

Yeah, this cover was the only one I found in the country but it was pretty rough. Reqired 2 hours of prep according to my invoice. I don't doubt it either...

I'll probably ziptie it to the foglight bracket, sounds like a good idea.

when i read the title, i was like "oh boy, another perfect e34 thrown to waste by an incompetent shop, :(" but then i read and its just the normal stuff that happens when people think they know what there doing. Sounds like you made it out pretty pleased tho. Your car is gonna be sexy in m-tech clothes.

Thanks guys, I can't wait to show the pics...it really looks awesome. I stood around for 15 minutes just walking around the car. It's so nice because I've had a front bumper with a massive chunk missing for a few months now, and a rear bumper with an awful epoxy job for more than a year! No longer beater status...

Question....where did you get the mtech bumper?

www.car-part.com

It was the only one on there, and it's a huge website.

Paid $375 + $150 shipping. The bumper was in pretty rough shape, lots of scrapes and gouges. It also has the headlamp washers (I like the look) but with a few broken nozzles.

Sounds like typical body shop BS Denton....

I just got mine back to find that they didn't install any of the clips that hold the side skirts onto the rocker lip properly. Fortunately the 150 miles I put on her before I got back to where I had the style 32's didn't have any of them fall off, and I was able to reinstall them properly.

It seems that the body shops don't understand how to properly install the rear bumpers either. The adjuster on the passengers side of my M-Tech rear wasn't even set (the pin wasn't pressed in properly. Moreover, I also had the sag issue you talk of. The sag fix wasn't that bad, but the bumper is now every so slightly warped and the cover doesn't fit as well as it could. Here are a few pics with the tow cover off. There's a clip that should hold the bumper up around the two hook cover, and fix the sag issue. BTW, mine rear bumper was $65 outta the local u-pull stuff. Unfortunately the 535 it came from was a front hit, so no front M-tech.

Lucky SOB! $65?

How did you fix the rear sag? I don't know what to do other than a zip-tie? No clue of how it was set up from the factory...

If you look closer at the two pics above, the bumper goes into a clip that's on the body. The green portion where it says Heckschuerze is the bumper while the black section around the tow hook is the clip. The body shop never got the bumper into the clip, and thus the sag.
