View Full Version : E36 DDM DEPO HID throwing codes?
allerac 04-10-2008, 01:39 PM after 2 days, i turned my headlights on leaving work, passenger side didn't turn on, turned lights off/on and it was back on, but now its throwing a code every time i turn them on, its works but i didn't think that the lights threw a code...
Is there a way to get rid of it
Montreal e36 04-10-2008, 01:45 PM I believe you could install a 10a fuse and the code will dissapear
Mpowered95 04-10-2008, 02:20 PM i think Habbie has an eliminator HID kit that doesnt throw codes. personally, id just ignore it.
volcomnator999 04-10-2008, 03:38 PM some aftermarket HID's tend to throw codes on certain cars..like mpowered95 said theres an eliminator kit that might work
thats why i went with OEM hids hehe

please dont give incorrect information. the reason the code is appearing is bc the system senses that not enough power is being drawing from the lights, bc HIDs tend to use less wattage then stock halogens. hence the OBC failure.
The Beastmaster 04-10-2008, 04:43 PM Stock halogen pull @ 50 - 55 watts of energy. A HID kit pulls @ 35 watts. This diference is what is throwing your code. You can try resistors, eliminators or whatever is out there.
allerac 04-10-2008, 05:08 PM alright thanks it was weird that it took 2 days for it to be thrown but it isnt a big deal if it really begins to bother me il buy those from habbie

sometimes all it takes is one surge and the system detects it and boom, low beam failure. my prolumens went about a year without throwing a code, and than 1 day out of nowhere, it came on. i turned the car off, and back on and it was gone.
Boris1111 04-10-2008, 06:14 PM Will this always happen if you put in 35w HIDs?
Mpowered95 04-10-2008, 06:15 PM Will this always happen if you put in 35w HIDs?
no, it selectively picks its victims. :stickoutt
allerac 04-10-2008, 06:15 PM i have 35w so it happend with me, anyone with 55w?
Lexicon740il 04-10-2008, 06:36 PM They can be fixed with a resistor pack.
They are wired inline with your kit. It provides the proper resistance the check control system is looking for so it won't trip the error.
AngelEye328i 04-10-2008, 06:40 PM Will this always happen if you put in 35w HIDs?
Take me for example:
E36 1998 328i (M. Blue)-- didn't throw error-- Phillip HID kits
E36 1997 Sedan M3 (Techno)-- didn't throw error---Xtec Kit from Umnitza
E36 1997 Sedan M3 (White)-- throw error--Apexcone HID Kit
E36 1997 Coupe M3 (silver)--didn't throw error--Prolumen HID kit
E36 1993 325is (M. blue)--- didn't throw error--Apexcone HID kit
E36 1998 Sedan M3 (silver)---didn't throw error-- DDM HID kit
E36 1997 Sedan M3 (silver)-- throw error--Prolumen HID kit
E46 2002 M3--stock no error with my LED tail light:)
All kits are 35W ballast..
allerac 04-10-2008, 06:44 PM u can get 35w and 55w right? and e36 1997 328i (black) -- threw error
Boris1111 04-10-2008, 06:45 PM Hmm, that's an impressive list of M3s
Let's see what my 96 decides to do when I install the HIDs
forumjp59 04-10-2008, 07:11 PM i have 35w so it happend with me, anyone with 55w?
yep, I have 55w and it happened...I expected it too.
MTrace 04-10-2008, 07:16 PM Let's see what my 96 decides to do when I install the HIDs
My 96 threw it, It gets annoying after looking at it everyday.
The Beastmaster 04-11-2008, 12:53 AM All I can say is it is a crapshoot as to who will get the lbf message.
juscool 04-11-2008, 01:55 PM Same thing with me 35 watt kit. I just ordered a kit from DDM for $40. I got tired of seeing that code (low beam failure).
ljohnc 04-13-2008, 03:41 PM i got a set of the 55w from ddm on my 95 m and it threw the code. whats weird is that i plug up my stock headlights and the code is still there. both the low and highs work. still code? any suggestions?
ATLE36M3 04-14-2008, 04:27 PM I have the lbf code, 35 watt depos. 98 m3 coupe :shifty
AngelEye328i 04-14-2008, 05:41 PM Even with the LBF kit, it doesn't guarantee it will fix the problems. Like Beast said, its a crap shoot or even better a guy once said "Life is like a box of cholocate, you'll never what you going to get":D
Nosphoros 04-16-2008, 12:52 AM I have a 55w kit, my E36 throws it sometimes, and sometimes not. Depends on how long the bulbs (take to) light up.
allerac 04-16-2008, 12:58 AM the reason i dont like it is sometimes depending on where im parked i cant tell if my headlights are working... a couple of days ago (maybe a misfire) but my passenger headlight didn't turn on, didn't find out till i saw the reflection in someone else's car... all i had to do was turn it on/off but i like my codes to warn me about things that are really happening =/
Swerve 04-16-2008, 07:13 PM I got the BOW3 Bulb Out Warning Canceler kit from Apexcone today ($40 + $30 shipping + $15 taxes and fees) and this better solve the problem. The LBF message on the OBC is embarrassing.
easymoney 04-23-2008, 06:33 PM Just ignore it! Hehe...
Swerve 04-23-2008, 11:10 PM Did it work?
NO:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad
And Apexcone hasn't gotten back to be about it.
LuvMy328is 04-24-2008, 12:36 AM Stock halogen pull @ 50 - 55 watts of energy. A HID kit pulls @ 35 watts. This diference is what is throwing your code. You can try resistors, eliminators or whatever is out there.
To elaborate.....
What happens is this:
Halogen light = 51 or 55watt I will use 55watt as my example
55watts / 13.8 volts (typical voltage while the car is running) = 3.98 rounded 4 amps of current. No LBF errors
NOW
HID kit 35watts / 13.8 volts = 2.5 amps of current drawn
Conclusion: Since HID's are more efficient and draw less current, the OBC thinks you have a bulb out.
~Phil
Swerve 04-24-2008, 05:17 PM ^^^Okay, but these 'Eliminators' are supposed to address this difference so that the OBC doesn't display the message.
LuvMy328is 04-24-2008, 05:31 PM Yea, but unfortunately that don't work for everyone. Maybe using a new relay wired to the hot under the hood and using the old wiring as a trigger would work.
~Phil
thejaff 06-07-2008, 04:54 PM Did you get the LBF fixed? I just installed 55W 6Ks today with the BOW3 and am getting the same code.
98DakarM3 06-07-2008, 05:45 PM Personally, I was never able to get the LBF to go away, even with eliminators. So i just permanently disabled the LBF using this write up. Very simple.. can be done in a half hour with proper tools

svginferno 06-07-2008, 06:04 PM Yeah...I have 55W and I occasionally get the LBF, as well as a TLF. As long as they work after a few minutes, I'm fine w/ it. :dunno
Swerve 06-08-2008, 02:02 PM Did you get the LBF fixed? I just installed 55W 6Ks today with the BOW3 and am getting the same code.
nope, but Apexcone offered to refund me the purchase price. I still have to send them back, but I'll still be out the all the shipping, duty, and taxes.
rd99m3 06-08-2008, 06:45 PM I got it with my 55w's but my fog lights dont work so it might just be because of that.
GimmieSumMo72 06-08-2008, 06:53 PM i have 55w on both low beams and fogs. i dont get a code with my fogs (bav toys), but i do with my low beams (DDM)...
I have 55w prolumens in my headlights. For the most part they work perfect, but I've gotten a code on a few rare occasions.
