View Full Version : My first run-in with the law

I got out the door very late yesterday and was in a rush the entire way to work. There's a certain stretch of Old Denton Rd. right off the 121 that has a speed limit of 50, but most people cruise 65+. I was probably doing 75 and lifted off the throttle as I came to a hill with a traffic light. As I was cruising up the hill, a Carrollton patrol car came over the crest. I tried slowing a little, but I was already toast. He swung into the conveniently located left turn pullout and busted a ewey. As I came to the light it turned yellow. Looking in the rearview I saw he was still wayyy back there and I figured he would just give up when he hit the red light and cross traffic. WRONG. He hit his lights and cleared the intersection and took his sweet ass time catching up to me. I turned off Old Denton onto a side street, pulled over and shut the car off. When he came up to my window he said, "Morning! You know why I pulled you over, right?" I smiled and said yes, and he said "Yeah, you were going a little fast back there, huh?" He asked for my license and insurance and asked a few questions about where I live and work (I still have AZ tags and license). He let me sweat it out for about five minutes before he came back to the car. "I'm going to give you a verbal warning - just watch your speed. I got you at 63, so you must have been going a lot faster than that before you came up the hill. Make sure you get everything changed over, and hey, see if you can get that same plate! That's a great plate!" He gave me my documents back and I was back on my way. I thought it was pretty cool, especially with everyone I know here and at work telling me about how bad the cops are here ("Welcome to Texas, here's your ticket").

most troppers are that way if they've got a bead on you. otherwise they let you sweat it out.
but I find that most local cops in each city as long as you aren't a bad person will be nice to you.
but at 13mph over when he clocked you you got lucky imo. I'd have given you the ticket.

In my travels I have found that if you follow a few simple rules when you get pulled over for speeding (and you don't have a suspended license, warrants, etc.) you probably won't get a ticket...

Try to pull over into a parking lot. Facing your vehicle towards a barrier or building is a bonus. Put down your window, turn off your car and stereo and put both hands on top of the steering wheel. As the cop approaches, turn your head and make eye contact, maybe even smile. Try to sound apologetic and sincere, don't argue or protest. Be polite and refer to them as 'officer'. This has worked for me for years, no tickets, knock on wood.

it also doesn't hurt if you accidently drop your military id when you are pulling out your dl. nevermind i was a contractor, it's got me out of and into a few things

Very true... coupled with USAA insurance, it definitely doesn't hurt. Wes has gotten out of more than a handful of tickets leaving his wallet open with his military ID showing. If you have a concealed, cops also appreciate you handing them your CHL with your DL, that typically lets them know you're law-abiding and "responsible".

man, consider yourself lucky. ive had two run-ins with carroton's finest (or not), and both times they were extremely rude while i was very nice and respectful. i did almost exactly what you said you do, and still got tickets both times. whenever im in carrolton, especially on george bush, i never speed. i guess thats what tickets are supposed to do....

Hate to say it, but it seems like personal responsibility is absent these days.

in most areas of DFW, V1 will no longer help much during day as most counties are now using lasers. V1+ ZR3 = FTW

Is that before or after you realize you're driving an E36 and can't outrun them?

^ it's my understanding they need two get to laser hits on you. every time i've been lasered, I tend to go off 2-3 times.

my V1 has saved me from laser plenty of times. Usually I will get the bounce off from one of the cars in front of me and I have enough time to slow down.

5+ Years of having the V1 and 0 tickets (knocks on wood)

Agreed, my V1 has saved me from radar and laser quite often, I also assume it catches the signal bouncing. I just sent my old V1 in and got an updated version. I really like the Junk detector it has now!

Depends on the use, I got caught yesterday on the way home w/ laser. No warnings on the V1 until I was tagged.

Yeah, working on upping the ante with some additional laser protection in the future. From what I have seen though, it's the major metro areas that are equipping the cops with laser. Road trippin' through AR, MO, IL, & IN I never saw or received any laser warnings.

I think it depends on how old yours is... mine was about 5 years old, so it was definitely worth the upgrade for me. Less of a brick on my windshield now and it has much more advanced technology. I sent it in through the upgrade feature on the website and got it back within a week. They send it to you Adult Signature Required and that's a huge PITA, but other than that it was a breeze and well worth it IMO!

not bad, my brother and I did a 1900 mile CT to texas trip in his new car. Second best way to save yourself from tickets other than a V1: military ID

That was the only time we were pulled over that trip, maybe an hour into texas and the officer seemed nice. My brother seems to think otherwise being arrested twice by them..
