From the BMW website, it says the iphone is only compatible with coupes with 03/07 or later production date. I'm planning to buy a coupe with a 09/06 production date, so it obviously won't work like the later ones. My question is, will my iphone still connect via bluetooth for handsfree calling? I know it won't have the USB connector so it won't have all the functionality, but will it at least connect for basic calling? The car is equipped with iDrive (Nav) but not an ipod connector...Thanks for any input/tips!!!

Ahhh...I used my iPhone with both my 335i's... First was Build 10/06, next one 2/07. You should be fine.

So it connects fine--what is it you're not getting that you get when you have the USB option? Does it show who's calling on the idrive screen? Thanks

I use mine with the bluetooth. It shows my phonebook and who is calling. Its a great feature. I can never go back to a car without bluetooth.

In an attempt to not double post, I'd like to ask a quick question based off of this original post: I'm trying to pair my iPhone to my 08 328xi sedan and I get to the point where it asks for the PIN on my iPhone and I have no idea what to put in there. Anyone know?

try 0000, 1234,or 12345

Generally, all bluetooth headset devices have a PIN code which has to be entered on the phone to complete the pairing. In this case, the car is like one giant wireless headset. :-)

You should have been given the PIN with your manuals/paperwork. If you don't have that, try 0000 -- the default code for most headsets. If that doesn't work, you'll have to talk to the dealer to get the code, most likely.

No PIN was given to me. I'll try those options...

I will say: When my phone finds the "giant headset" it says something like "BMW 72456" - but I tried 72456 for the PIN and it did not work. Thanks for the info.

I figured it out! When you get to the part where your phone is asking for your pin#, all you do is pick whatever you want (4 numbers), but then this is the part that wasn't completely easy to figure out. After entering those four numbers on your phone, you have to go to the led readout (car) where it says "make sure to pair a compatible phone" and turn the right button (scroll) it to the right which will then reveal the next steps on the readout of the car. Then on that you'll see where to punch in the same four numbers...

duh.

Why do I have a feeling this would've been much more intuitive if I had the nav screen :)

I think you're a bit confused with the bluetooth connectivity and the usb connectivity. They're for different things.

The bluetooth connectivity is what lets your car send/receive phone calls from your iphone. It also lets your car read your address book. Essentially, bluetooth is for all the PHONE functions of your iphone.

The USB connectivity is for the IPOD functions of your iphone. The USB allows your car to browse your music collection and control your ipod for listenning to music and podcasts and stuff. It'll also charge your iphone.

The bluetooth stuff has nothing to do with music and the USB stuff has nothing to do with the phone.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I'm the original poster of this and have had car now 3-4 months. I'm using a 1st gen iPhone with an early production 335i with bluetooth (but NO USB/ipod option). Bluetooth works intermittently w/my iphone. Sometimes it works great. Often, however, it does not. Basically the problem is, when I make or receive a call, the other party can hear me fine, but I cannot hear them. I can hear only snippets of what they are saying, but most of the time its just dead air. If i hang-up and redial, it still doesn't work. Then, the next day it will work fine.

Took it to the dealer who said they're about to remove the iphone from the approved list since they've had a lot of problems w/it. He said it had something to do with the iphone searching for wi-fi or something like that. He said to disable that and try it. They also re-programmed the bluetooth on the car during the service visit.

After the service visit, it worked fine for a few days, but today I had the same problem I had before. I haven't disabled wi-fi or anything, since I use that frequently and don't want to go through the hassle.

Has anyone had a similiar problem or have any suggestion to help me out? Thanks

i synced a 1st gen iphone with my E90 and it ddint work. i would get a call and it would show up on the idrive screen but then would only come through the phone. it also never would sync my contacts. i only had the phone for a day before i decided i hated it and switched back to my blackberry which works perfectly and flawlessly with my e90.

It syncs my contacts, no problem. Sometimes it works great. It also works flawlessly with my wifes Samsung BlackJack II, so I know it's iPhone related...
