hey guys i need a little advice. i'm debating whether or not to lease a e90 335xi. i currently own a chevrolet 2500hd and do to future events a 2wd application might not be in my best interest. i financed the chevy about 7-8 months ago, agh! i'm a tech at concord bmw and would get a great lease rate, but i'm pretty sure i would take a ridiculous hit on my truck if i traded it in, or even sold it. i don't know what to do.

Losing money to save money is like "fighting for peace" or "Having sex for virginity"

It doesn't make sense to lose (I'm guessing $5-8K) on anything. What is an AWD car going to give you? Obviously more bad weather traction, but less utility. If you need something at this point you might want to find an old AWD beater o use in the snow. I know it doesn't snow all year anywhere so 2Wd will work for at least 60% of the year.

yeah but paying $4.30gal for diesel here is riduculous and it doesn't seem like its going to level out. it sucks. when i first bought the truck diesel was 20-30 cents cheaper than regular, now its the complete opposite. and a 30gal tank makes for a big hit at the pumps. i wonder if i'll benifit in the long run. who knows.

I don't understand this logic, it makes NO sense.

If you LOSE $5,000 that is the equivalent of 500 gallons of gas at $5/gallon. That's money used to accomplish work. LOSING $5,000 to save $10 at the pump would mean you'd have to fill up 500 times before you "recouped" the loss you were willing to save by LOSING money.

LOSING, THROWING AWAY, GIVING AWAY...it's money you are throwing out the window. You wouldn't throw $5,000 out the door right? So suck it up and work with what you got, because saying you want to save $10 each fill up by losing a huge amount of money is horrible.,

I'll do you a favor, you can give me half of the loss, I'll kick you in the nuts and you'll come out at least $2,500 ahead (vegas vacation quote)...

But serious THINK about what you're doing not the short term at the pump.

Check your math before you give advice my man. 500 gallons at $5 a gallon....is $2500

15x$3.90gal=$58.50 - BMW
30x$4.30gal=$129 - my diesel

i get roughly 400mi to a tank. 400/30=13.3mpg
BMW epa estimates 17/25, so the bmw will get roughly 330miles to a tank averaging 22mpg.

so my annual fuel cost is $2064, providing that i fill up every 3weeks. this is for the diesel. the bmw would be $1404 if i filled up 2 times a month. say over a three year lease, the cost would be roughly $4200. the diesel would be $6200. i save $2000 over the course of three years. but maybe my insurance goes up? becuase i drive a beamer instead of a work truck.

there are some employees at work who are leasing there 335s for around 350/month. right now i pay $475 for my truck. $17,100 is how much i'll spend over the next 3 years for my truck. say 350 for an employee lease and its $12,600 spent over a 3 year lease.

3 years, fuel+payment
BMW-$16,800
diesel-$23,300

BMW saves me $6500 over 3 yrs.

i think if i could swing a deal it would be benificial to me. these numbers are based solely on fuel prices staying the same over the next 3yrs. who knows maybe diesel prices will go higher! aghhh!

Your logic is flawed you start at -$5,000 with the new car. So you have to go much longer than just the fuel cost.

Using your $600 difference a year you have to OWN the car for 8 years before you make up that $5,000 loss (and that's if you only lose 5k).

You are comparing scenario's that if you didn't lose money. You are going to lose a grip.

Actually my advice is flawed in the better direction...it's 1,000 gallons instead of 500. ;)

For some reason I was thinking of $10/gallon, lol.

My advice is even better.

And if you hate your truck and are willing to lose money on it...just say you want a new car and don't like the truck. The excuse of MPG is really invalid.

If you are that worried about gas prices...

DON'T SPEND A BUNCH OF MONEY FOR A BMW!

Get a Dodge Neon instead and pay 1/4 of what you'd pay for a BMW, LOL:buttrock

drumroll......"MONEY SAVED" cha. ching.

Keep the truck for one more year, record how much gas it is costing you in that year and then see after a year if it makes sense to trade it based on 1 year gas consumption. My guess is it won't. This is like people who buy hybrids to save $$, rarely is the extra cost of the hybrid offset the $$ saved at the pump, many would have been better off buying an economy car that costs less.
Now if the reason you want the 335 is because you are drooling over one every time you see it daily at work, that is understandable and reason enough to sell the truck and buy it and screw the money, but trying to rationalize it in any way other than "want" is not a good approach.

It doesn't matter what the cost is...it's losing $5,000+ dollars.

Where are you getting $350 a month for a 335? Try almost doubling that depending on options. I just leased a 335i coupe w/ an MSRP of 45895 and I got it for 44k even. At that price it's 2150 down and $650 per month. This is at 3 year 30k miles. Granted a sedan would save a couple grand and if you didn't get any options you would still be looking at $500 month.
