After 135,000 miles, my windshield has become pitted to the point that it is difficult to look through when the sun hits it from certain angles. Received a $675 quote for replacement with factory original glass. Is this reasonable?

Anything to watch out for when replaceing the windshield? I do not plan to do the work -- just want to be informed.

Thanks.

make sure you have a new windshield gasket - some have "reused" this (myself included), but a new one works better. Also, ask the installer how many BMW's he has done (unless of course you go to the dealer).
If it is NOT BMW OEM glass, you should be able to get it installed for $300 or less (that's what I paid for my last windshield last year)

I had it done for $320 after tax, on my last e36. Im sure it would be similar for the e31.

Agreed. The gasket can be reused but it will take very careful effort to detach the old one cleanly. Most glass places do not take the time to do that. Plus the gasket it not that expensive.

As for Glass, as long as it is made by SECURIT and has the same DOT # as the BMW OE it is the same glass. The $300 difference is the BMW logo.

PILKINGTON is also a BMW supplier of glass. They put the BMW logo on their glass for the $300 upcharge.

I thought Pilkington only made newer BMW glass with rain sensors, etc?

Is the gasket something supplied by the glass place or do we need to get it ahead of time from the dealer?

Dealer Item - buy it from GAULT for a good price
