I have the green sticker on the case so my manual indicated synthetic gear lube.

Planning on changing both the transmission and differential fluids but can I use a synthetic 75W90 gear lube for both? A BMW tech indicated that they use 80W90 (not so easy to find locally) at the shop.

I have read that some newer BMW owners with manual transmissions are using Redline or Mobil 1 ATF instead of gear lube.

What's the correct fluid for the manual transmission for my '85 e28?

Thanks in advance.

Do not use hypoid lube in the transmission. It will damage your synchros. The sulphur content in the hypoid formulation is not compatible with the brass synchros. Mobil 1 15W50 or ATF is fine.

There are a lot of possible options, but in my personal experience I was happiest with Redline MT90. Note, however, that most any synthetic oil will exacerbate existing leaks.

I'm going to use Redline MTL as soon as I get around to it.

I run MTL and it is great stuff. It definitely smoothed out the shifting and it never feels heavy when cold.

I just changed to Redline D4 ATF and shifts feel a bit smoother, it was highly recommended by my mechanic....and he hasn't steered me wrong yet. :D

Was looking under my car ('87 528e) and could not find a colored label. There's a black background label with blue BMW labels on it and a part number. ???? Any guidance?

Thanks, Scott
