i was wondering what you guys put in the tank.
i read in the paperwork that 87 is ok on these engines.
i've been fuelling mine with 93 but i wonder if that is not wasted
since it's not a high compression engine (8.8 to 1)

you only need the expensive stuff if your car is chipped, otherwise the cheap stuff will run the same-

..even then, the M70 runs on 87 octane, even with Chips! Mine has Wokke CHips and only gets 87 octane and runs like a bat out of hell, considering it's almost 200,000 miles.

i guess, almost everyones car is chipped, right?
how much are the wokke chips?

always used 87 only in my last V12,.......the M70 is designed to run on 87.......AND I had the Wokke chips.............no issues........the TT only uses 93 for obvious reasons......

That is alot of the reason I own all M70 cars. I did not want the higher compression motor. I run 87-89 and occasionally will run a tank of 93 thru. All are chipped. With the quality of fuel, I don't see any sense in a higher compression motor with knock sensors to adjust the timing and lose power?

87 will be more efficient if thats what it says it can run on. Burns faster.

I feel stupid, and here I am running 94 octane....thanks for the info guys.

Found this one out the hard way. If you run higher than 89 octane the unburnt gas will make you fail emissions because you will be putting too many hydrocarbons (gas) into the air.

Hi I usually run 97 super or 95.

The M60 will run just fine on 89....Which I guess is 95 in your scale. Bah, stupid different octane calculations.

it would not even surprise me, if the high octane leaves more carbon on the valves.

Does all this apply to the M73 engine? I've been running the highest octane (93) because I assumed that was the only way to go.

I'm feeling stupid too :(, wasting $ on higher octane than what's needed. Any thoughts on brands of gas?

One of the historical reasons for using the highest octane available has been the additive package varies with octane and brand.

When prices were lower the difference for keeping mileage high with clean injectors was lower running 92/93 US than if you had to add a good injection cleaner every couple of tanks.

This becomes more costly using the cheap discounted off brand gas that was available at some places. I needed to add a $5 can of cleaner every couple of tanks to save 10 cents a gallon or loose 10% or so of the mileage which cost even more.:(

I use Chevron Hi-Octane. After seeing the sludge in the engine from the PO's choice of using Arco gas, it made me even more of a believer in Techron (gas receipts came with my car). None of my other cars ever had so much sludge inside. You gotta pay to play. I dump Techron additive every few tanks. I get great mileage (for E31).

i rather save twenty cent a gallon and buy the additive of my choice.
and still have a clean engine... (clean engine...that sounds sort of an oxymoron... anyway)

After skylines I also ran the 94 for a few tanks, then tried 87 one day and the car ran significantly better and seemed faster. I have never looked back since...

In your quest to out cheap each other do remember that the V12 doesn't have knock sensors. That diesel like rattle you hear when running really cheap kerosene like substances for fuel is the tops of your pistons being hammered by detonation.

TTTXGreg

I could be wrong but I understand the M70 does not and the M73 does have knock sensors.

Terry.............the manufacturer recommends 87 for the M70...........there should not be any issues.........

Rattle? I run 87 Octane in my M70 and there are no rattles, maybe the guys that pump the gas for you in Oregon are putting one over on you..

It was the manual that originally prompted me to run the 87. I tried a few tanks back to back and I can honestly say it ran better on the 87 then the 94.

For the M60, the manual says 89 or higher. Says it on the inside of the tank cover, too.

My ride prefers 91 over 89. Better mileage, smoother ride.

My 750 enjoyed 87 the best--and it was recommended.

Two different motors and compression, If my memory serves me right the m60 is @ 10 to 1 whereas the m70's are at 8, 8 1/2 to 1. Hence the different fuel requirements. The m70 should have no issues with 87 octane.

M60 likes 89. It's whats on the cap for my E34 540i. I put 93 in the E39 though.

:shifty, the M60 can get away with 87 if you don't hammer it though. I've gotten no detonation from it.

May not get detonation (knock sensor will retard timing) but might be down on power...........

I've always used the highest octane available for any of my cars. I'm sure that there are all sorts of opinions and such, but using the best octane available seems to have been kind to me since I haven't had any major issues with my 840 nor my 4-Runner.

I do stick to a few stations: Chevron, 76 and Shell. I AVOID Mobil/Exxon and Arco. Here's an interesting website for your reading pleasure: http://www.toptiergas.com/

Enjoy!
