I just got back from my dealer after getting to the root of stange rattle/vibration when I feathered off the throttle at lower speeds (not too much wind noise so I could hear it). It sounded a lot like a metal sheild in the engine compartment that was loose.

The first 3 visits (mainly for brakes and oil cooler retrofit) the service writer said they couldn't hear it or find it.

The 4th visit they found it was an issue that they had dealt with before where the waste gates are making the noise. In fact a BMW regional tech happened to be there and investigated as far as possible. They gladly fixed the issue but said it may return.

They also told me BMW will replace the turbos if it continues to be a problem.

This isn't a problem for all 335s but if you hear something like this in the aforementioned conditions don't let the dealer tell you it doesn't exist.

BTW. They said it doesn't degrade performance.

Hope this helps somebody who has been told they're crazy and are hearing things.

Could this be the cause? There appears to be a SIB regarding this issue.

kurga, That's exactly it.

My dealer was able to adjust/shim/use voodoo or something to get rid of it.

They said that if it comes back they will replace the turbo, also, that BMW knows of this (obviously from your post). I like that they were forthcoming about the issue.

My car still feels fast and the noise is gone -- for now -- so I'm happy, especially since BMW and my dealer are aware.
