Just changed the oil in my 97 528i and when I started to car to check for leaks...sure enough, leaking at the filter housing, like the o-ring isn't doing its job. I may have torqued it down too far originally (I don't have a torque wrench that will work with that massive 36mm socket). Even hand tightened then snugged, it's not sealed well.
I have an extra o-ring, I may have to use that tomorrow.
I don't know if I'm asking for help or just saying ARGH. :mad I'll try again tomorrow.

Get an adapter so you can use your torque wrench. You might want to assure the the "O" ring is in the groove.
I don't think I've read about anyone breaking the housing by over-torqueing the top.

Check the threads of the filter housing and make sure they are lined up correctly, and they are not damaged.

ditto the suggestion to check the O-ring to make sure that it is down inside its groove...the O-ring should NOT be sitting on the threads of the lid...and either TORQUE to spec...or hand tighten...the oil reservoir lid does NOT have to be screwed on tight as the sphincter of a juvenile kicked up to adult prison: :stickoutt

Yep, the o-ring wasn't in the groove. Apparently I needed one less beer last night to finish that project. Thanks guys!
