Just a thanks to all the members who posted pics and tips when adding a "ski pass" and then adding a sub into that. I did the cutting this week and just finished the job. I have a few small things I need to do, but it's done.

And thanks to bmwtips for the wiring diagrams!

I used LOTS of foam, and let me tell you, with my trunk open and the volume cranked up, there is barley any noise and almost zero trunk rattle with it closed. It's not as pretty as I would like, but the end result has me smiling.

Yes there is about 2 inches of foam overlap all the way around the box. yes that is an orange strap securing my sub, I can remove it in under 60 seconds. And I put a rubber grommet around the hole I cut.

looks good to me!

you could put a removable carpeted board up behind the sub in the trunk to cover everything up. also, you could use speaker grill cloth from partsexpress to cover the sub opening. i didn't in my e36, but have in my e39.
