View Full Version : Post pics of the Mods you regret the most
SHWELL 04-04-2008, 06:49 PM :madONLY POST PICS OF YOUR OWN VEHICLE...........:nono
Here is your chance to publicly denounce that "Mod" you regretted doing..... It could be anything that you are mad at yourself for doing. Or it just did not work out the way you intended.
I'll start with the infamous Headlight mod...... Background to this is, my wife and daughters purchased these off of Ebay for my '07 Fathers day gift..... And being the good man that I am, I installed them and took all the abuse of this site and the Bimmer world in general. I was an eye opener as to how important ones mods are to any group of enthsiasts interest in being seen/associated with you......

SHWELL 04-04-2008, 06:57 PM Pics not necessary.... This is like an AA meeting for modders......
Hi, I am Shwell (AKA Ancel) And I a m a moddaholic....... I will install anything that is different........
DaJackel 04-04-2008, 07:00 PM No pics either, but the Zomkspeed ebay headlights. I never installed them and ended up getting a refund. Never again will I buy something off eBay just because its cheap and looks good...
I'm gettin 2001+ Hella Euros up front soon and hella celis tails :) whenever the website has both of them in stock..:shifty :mad

Jackcat559 04-04-2008, 07:37 PM Hi, I'm Jackcat559. I regret not taking my time in doing research, and having to do it over again.
Agh, do it right the first time
Some of the regrets are : Eibach springs, PIAA angle eye bulbs, and the big one..... letting Level 10 touch my transmission
Htownmobaudio 04-04-2008, 07:47 PM eyebrows that i never installed on my e39

Alexi21 04-04-2008, 08:16 PM M5 rep wheels. They look good and I got them cheap, but I wish I would of gotten something more unique and something with a lip.
Seph540i 04-04-2008, 08:17 PM The mod I regret most is getting a Cadillac instead of a bimmer. T-T
Calz32 04-04-2008, 08:18 PM The eyebrows i put on my car and an M5 badge.
You badged it as an m5? dayyyuuuum
Right now, it has to be my Predator ICE's by default. They're good and all, but not as bright during the day as I would have expected. I was torn between DDM and Umnitza but umnitza is so close I figured I didnt have to pay shipping and I had product support right there.
what intake do you have?
Cosmos racing....I think stock works better and you don't have to spend the $150

VOKS7780 04-04-2008, 08:59 PM Hi I am VOKS7780, also a modoholic. What I regret the most is buying $66.00 crystal tails off e-gay, oops I mean e-bay :), and then have to deal with burnt brake bulb every two weeks. I'm going with Hella Celis next week.
Anyone want my crystal tails??? :shifty
BKDBLR 04-04-2008, 09:06 PM Hamman Roof wing and 3 piece Schnitzer trunk wing.....they were stolen 3 weeks later and I had to almost repaint the entire rear of the car

Most regretful mod to me so far was DINAN chip.. I expected to feel real gains... but I only felt a slight bit in throttle response and a permanent use of 91 octane feul.

Hmm... I dont have too many mods... But I guess it would be my 125.00 ebay tails... Although they do match my car's color BETTER then smoked hellas do and I've since grown to love them... :)
It did take me a while to get used to thier different look. But their function outweighed any doubts I had.

I agree, the black grill is good!
FaitH777 04-05-2008, 01:28 AM I regret buying Carbon Fiber grills, then breaking 2 tabs putting the stock ones back in...
waapples 04-05-2008, 03:37 AM Haven't done much to my car yet, but I regret buying the stock pre-AE headlight broken low beam bulb adapter right before I replaced the stock to Hella AE headlights.
But other than that, I've been pretty happy with what I've done so far. :)
AE headlights
Yellow lamin-x fog films
F/10mm & R/18mm H&R spacers
This year's plan: rear M5 or Eibach anti-sway bar & replace all 4 tires & possibly HID fogs.

ttgxc 04-05-2008, 10:06 AM What if you don't have any regrets so far?
OP had did you go about changing your headlights after the ebay ones? It is a hard thing when someone close to you gets something for you with great intentions and it is not what you want at all.
rich30769 04-05-2008, 10:53 AM Hamman Roof wing and 3 piece Schnitzer trunk wing.....they were stolen 3 weeks later and I had to almost repaint the entire rear of the car
I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate a thief.
BlackSapphire 04-05-2008, 11:09 AM I regret getting an auto as well. It's not a mod but it's something I regret all the time. ALL the time!
I also regret installing the H&R springs on my stock struts/shocks. Guess what? I had to do it again in less than 6 months with the FSDs. Impatience FTL.
DMasters 04-05-2008, 12:07 PM 18" non-staggered Beyern 5 wheels....they just weren't cuttin the mustard for me. I bought them used and amazingly cheap, I sold them a month later and got exactly what I paid for them, so at least it wasn't a costly mistake.

Was this your 1st car that you modified the suspension?
I've also learned from my past that I paid to have skunk2 coilovers on stock struts/shocks but then couldn't stand the bouncy ride, and got myself a nice set of koni yellows in less than 6 months, which was another $100 to install, $100 was a big time money back in the days...
Now I know what to do a full upgrade while at it.
Busted up Umnitza lights and crinkled umnitza M5 bumper hunk a junk that got thrown away.

waapples 04-05-2008, 06:32 PM couldn't agree with you anymore jon...
Yeah, exactly....
It cracked me up after reading the vendor's response to peeps feed back on this issue, always claimed they never had a problem w/ the fitment issue instead of acknowledge the problem on their product.
I love how DDM deals with the problems so far, right up front & being responsible for their products, instead of blaming on something/ someone else.
fragzem 04-05-2008, 06:44 PM It's not a mod, but I attempted to take off the headlight lens to clean inside... never actually got it off, or totally back on, now I get moisture inside all the damn time.
and if I don't jump onto DDM's M5 Bumper sometime this month, that'll be a regret I have also.

No it wasn't. The dealer had just put new struts on it so I figured they would hold up longer than that. Oh well. I've modified the suspension on pretty much every car I've owned. This was the first BMW though.

The one I regret,
Putting the cheap ebay headlights the previous owner had when I bought the car (terrible light pattern from the projectors). I have new headlights on the way.

Why?
brandon5069 04-07-2008, 02:17 PM I don't think they "fit" the car. They're Huge! for one. They look funny from some angles. It took buying them, holding on to them for 6months, having them painted, installing them, and taking pics of my car to see this. I don't like ///M5 mirrors on ///M5's either.
Second...
I bought rep mirrors. The convex made me go cross eyed. I tried to adjust, but a 100 mile drive sealed the deal. My eyes were fatigued after driving on the highway for just that short amount of time.
They had to go...

You forgot to mention the mirrors looks like Sherk ears .. I think they look great .. btw, the secret to looking into the mirrors .. just focus on the center section .. only use the outside section for your blind spot ..

The write up below should help. I plan to install mine in a week. ;)
They are expensive. About $1000 new on ebay and they are VERY hard to get. I managed to grab a set used for $450 and that was a steal. You'll see mine at the meet. I hate m5 mirrors. But I also have a strange obsession with aftermarket mirrors. :dunno I had RD Cups on my e36 and people used to "wtf" them all the time. I like rare stuff I guess, and m5 mirrors are not rare.

I like the shape of the m5 mirrors but every time i look at my stockers, they seem to fit the cars line perfectly and the mirror itself is much better then any M5 mirror.
gravy 04-10-2008, 02:39 PM I regret buying the Umnitza P39's. From day one the internals of the lights have been loose (shake with road vibration). My headlights look like they're vibrating to oncoming traffic (cheap). Whenever I have called Umnitza, the owner talks to me like I'm an idiot. The AE's stop working after like 3 months too!

Also I sort of regret the Umnitza M5 front bumper, but my car is Alpine White so it's hard to see the ripples.

SHWELL 04-10-2008, 03:30 PM I have read one horror story too many to ever buy from Umnitza..... Alot of peeps like them, but the few that don't truly painted a picture I would not want to look at......

:devillook
Ive bought 2 things from them. the M5 replica bumper and some hella euro angel eye xenons. we all know how the bumper turned out. the headlights turned out fine, but theyre hella. if they had managed to fuck that up I think I wouldve had to give them some sort of award.
SHWELL 04-10-2008, 03:42 PM lofl
Nope, you are not qualified... Being broke saves you the pain and suffering of being flamed by the E39 devils..........:nono So you sir are safe...... NOt having money for mods is not a bad thing, not having money for food because of mods is a problem......
Well to be fair I did buy the car yesterday. But Im probably just going to find some rims, swap the headunit, and just the interior wood to the silver trim.
Seraph 04-10-2008, 03:49 PM Is Umnitza a supporting vendor still?
John 540i6 04-10-2008, 03:56 PM i regret the red race transmission mounts from UUC and Koni yellows.
The tranny mounts were too stiff which caused an annoying vibration.
The koni yellows are too soft. Will be buying bilstein sports here some day.
Jo@EuroDyne 04-10-2008, 04:10 PM The worst mod I ever did isn't on any of the e39s I had/have. It was on my first bimmer, an e30. I ran spacers...from that day on, i always look for direct fitment wheels...
SHWELL 04-10-2008, 04:10 PM Is Umnitza a supporting vendor still?
We'll find out if this is locked.... lol...
But to be honest none of us are bad mouthing them....... Facts are facts, I do not think anyone can argue that.

Haha I know, I was just curious because I've seen people get really touchy over it. Not that I really care people should be able to see what others have to say :)
aliaw540 04-10-2008, 04:54 PM Purchased replica Shark Fin and replica M5 lip from a popular vendor online. Got the items and they definitely would have been regretable if they went on. By the way, anyone lookin to buy these items cheap?

They have been real quiet lately. Its sad thought because they are actually nice guys. If there was ever an issue with Umnitza, it was their suppliers. The service was still top notch. Im sure they are around.

This is just FACT, not trashing them, but my true problem was the service when the product did not meet working standards.
SHWELL 04-10-2008, 06:13 PM You guys are getting of track...... Or off Topic....

8000k HID bulbs (Im the one on the right :rofl)

SHWELL 04-10-2008, 11:03 PM Jon i too went that route for a couple of weeks..... I was gonna wait until this thread fizzled to add that one.......
So far I have:
Chromed Out EBAY headlights
8000k HID
Bent Breyton Magics (Slightly bent)
Smoked Headlight Film
Seraph 04-10-2008, 11:08 PM Jon and Shwell, what did you guys hate about the 8000k HIDs?
Looks pretty cool to me. I assume they are too blue to be useful or something?

they were just a bit too blue for me. I was able to see the road and whatnot just fine, I just didnt like the look of them when viewing the car from the outside. I just always see honda civics, VWs, integras, etc driving around with 8000-10000k bulbs and I decided I didnt want to be lumped in with that crowd. I now have 6000k bulbs and I LOVE them, they are absolutely perfect. just enough blue to look good, but they look OEM enough like the acura TL and maxima HIDs :)

Ahh, so just didn't like the fact that you had the chance to get lumped in with ricers :D. I'm thinking about finally getting around to face lifting my car, guess the best way to pick lights would be heading to a meet and looking at everyone elses. 6K bulbs sound like a good idea... :ponder

oh dear god :rolleyes
from what I gather, my hellas were packed the same way his were. pathetic. each light was plastic-wrapped to a piece of cardboard and set inside an individual yellow hella box. then the 2 boxes were put in a bigger box and shipped out. no bubble wrap or any sort of wrap to be found in or around either box like umnitza claims.
I shall prepare an award this weekend, although I might get smacked with the ban stick :shifty
herc97 04-11-2008, 10:32 AM my rotors with the drilled holes in them, the N.Y.C streets have to many pot holes. I hit one at night and bent the rim and it split the rotor in half. I changed back to the stock ones much cheaper and more sturdier.

So you didn't want to look like someone in a civic or a vw, but now that you look somewhat like an acura or maxima its ok?

I thought I'd be clever and order a euro license plate bracket from Ebay.de.... Yea turns out it isn't even made for this bumper at all... I think it's for an E38 actually.

For me it was driving in the rain that was a problem... The color just did not do anything for my limited site during and right after rain...... I hope that makes sense.

yeah your 8000k definitely arent as blue as mine were. it probably does have alot to do with the brand of bulb since you have some nice ones :) however, most everyone who I didnt want to look like (ie ricers) dont have the nice bulbs either, so they all look extremely blue like mine did :(

slow reverse tilt... but yeah you have to get use to them... i get alot of compliments so yes i do like em...
