Its very normal for you not to know how to check the transmission fluid level. You have to get under the car and locate the tranny and find the fill hole and unscrew to see if any oil pours out. If it is, then your tranny has enough fluid. If it doesn't, then your low on oil.

Another way to tell if the tranny is low on oil is whether your experiencing a slipping gear change....although this might not be the most accurate way to see if you have enough oil.

P.S.: Our transmission does not have an dipstick.

Jim530 provided some accurate and great information, I just want to add that the reason why our transmissions don't have dipsticks and the reason why you can't find it is because they are supposedly filled with "lifetime fluid," which, as defined by BMW is 100,000 miles. They are supposedly maintenance free up until that mark, and I guess BMW assumes that the car will not be driven much after that point. It's really more of a marketing decision that has spilled over into their Engineering design. Very backwards.

do a page search on www.e38.org/e39 [Ctrl+F] ...or do a search thru the archives here...or look for an instructional write-up on www.bmwtips.com .

This topic is discussed often enough...even though these cars were designed with an (at the time) marketed "lifetime transmission fluid"....many owners have gone about changing it anyways...and have left instructions on how to do it.
