View Full Version : 1 series e-diff making it to 3 series?
pikeNM 04-04-2008, 09:09 AM Well I hope this isn't a repost, but my search-fu couldn't find it, so...
Found this: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/03/12/335i-to-get-135is-e-diff-in-future-variant/
Feedback from 1 owners seems mixed, though most seem to be saying it does its job in spirited street driving. For my part, I'm hoping that when this comes along, it can be retro-fitted to existing E92 cars more cheaply than an actual LSD. Somehow I doubt it... :-(
thekurgan 04-04-2008, 09:58 AM I was told that it was supposed to go into april 2007 and later 335is, but the downside is that the housing is welded, so if you wanted a friction type LSD, it would be very expensive to do, whereas the non-welded units can use a Quaiffe or other.
pikeNM 04-04-2008, 11:37 AM Do you mean April 2008?
I heard about the welded diff topic; though I believe this has nothing to do with the e-diff, which is purely about applying brakes selectively to limit rear wheelspin.
I suppose the e-diff system just software... so perhaps it will be viable to retrofit it cheaply, if desired.
raceyBMW 04-04-2008, 01:52 PM The E-Diff just uses the DSC system to modulate the brakes to the slipping wheel to force the other wheel to spin at the same speed, a la mechanical LSD. The reviews about it seem pretty decent and will work just as well in probably about every situation other than on the track. Wonder if they could just update the software in any of our 335s to be able to use the E-diff system, or if there are actually physical differences in the diff?

April 2007, I asked my SA and he said I just missed it: Mar 2007 build, but I'm glad, as I can now look into a real mechanical locker as my diff is not welded.

As people have already mentioned, only M cars have true mechanical locking differentials. The DTC/DSC software simulates an LSD in the 135i's open differential.
The X6 has a real electronic locking differential.
