Wondering if we'll ever see the DCT transmission available for the 3-series or if they're going to force us to the M3 if we want that. :dunno:

Is that like the new SMG II? or is that the one with the paddle launch control like in the M5 and M6?

Me thinks he is confusing transmission lingo....DSG or S-tronic now is Audi, SMG is BMW.

I believe he means the new Dual Clutch Transmission used on the new M3. They call it M DCT:

Doubt they'll bring that to the non M cars, at least not yet, it is a differentiator for the M.

Wow, a lot of companies are starting to hop onto this dual clutch boat. The new Evo X MR has this as an option now too as its first "automatic" transmission.

M-DCT as noted above, is what I am referring to. It's like Audi's DSG, but it's a BMW transmission and thus more likely to come to BMW's cars than DSG. ;) :D

SMG is just a single clutch manual auto, where the M-DCT adds a second clutch (which is what DSG is). M-DCT & DSG work off the same principle in that one clutch handles gears 1,3,5, (7 in the M-DCT I believe) and the 2nd 2,4,6 so that there is always a gear ready, and its not has harsh of a shift like it was in the SMG. S-tronic and steptronic are just typical torque converter autos that allow manual selection of gears.

It'll be in the 3-series at some time. Someone at BMW said they're so impressed with it, they'll probably get rid of the Step in the 3 series since the DCT is more efficient and very smooth.

Slight correction: S-tronic is Audi's new name for DSG. Tiptronic is probably what you're thinking of that's like BMW's steptronic, which is a traditional automatic.

Yeah, you are right, I forgot DSG and S-tronic were the same thing. My old S4 was Tiptronic. Thanks for clearing that up.
