Well I was in another country for about 2 years and now that I came back (got back 2 months ago) I was looking into buying a new car. Now my price range was about 55 g's so i went down the list of cars that appealed to me which were the IS 350, sti, evo and the S5 . but i really didnt want to go japanese since my last car was one and the lack of luxury. So I wanted to go with the S5 then i read about the 335i and youtubed it like a mofo. On the show fifth gear the 335i took the S5 on track by a 100ths of a second which is not that much but still a car having more horsepower and "supposedly" better handling the 335i still beat it. A win is a win ^^ so I got the 335i and i love it. I automatically just thought the 335i could beat the IS 350 so i didnt really look into it. But recently i saw a drag race between the two cars and man did the IS 350 beat it that made me really sad lol. So whats up with that? It could be the driver right?

If you like the car and like how it feels you shouldnt compare it how it does in a quarter mile against other cars. I had a co worker a while ago he bought the B7 Audi S4 he had it for four months and was loving it. One day hes out driving and some tuned out Mustang Cobra beats him on the street and he sold the car and bought a Cobra. Theres always going to be faster car than yours no matter what you do.

It also has to do with the driver if you cant drive you could be driving a Ferrari and get beat by a car that doesnt quite measure up to the Ferrari not mensioning any brands or models.

LoL me a poser i hope not... just cuz i mean i do love speed as most people do thats why i got the 335i and not the 328 or 330. And the reason i didnt want to STI or EVO is cuz i wanted some class you know but between the IS350 and the 335i i mean i read the specs (just to get a brief understand on where the times stand and i know most of the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times are wrong but the will still be in that range) and figured that the 335i would win or at least be somewhat even... the 335i pretty much got smoked but i dont know what the IS has under the hood but it looked stock. ( i know looks can be deceiving)

Sticking to the OPs question... they are close 0-60, but from the 1/4 on, it's 335i all the way.

Be glad you bought the Bimmer because after owning a Trans Am WS6 and an ES300, getting the E92 was the perfect blend of both cars w/o question. The only brand I'd consider is a Porsche, which is in another class by itself.

Off topic, but that is the saddest thing I've heard in a while. He sold an Audi to buy a Ford b/c it beat him in a straight line?? Talk about taking a huge step down in the world in terms of everything else that matters in a car....

I would think a more appropriate comparison would be a test done by the same magazine. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/car_shopping/quickest_cars_0_60_mph/the_quickest_sedans_of_2008_30_000_to_40_000_featu re+page-8.html

They are pretty close, it wouldn't be too surprising if an IS350 beat a 335. If they're automatics, it'll be damn close, and if BMW is manual, it'll depend on the driver quite a bit.

Performance is a big factor in deciding what car to buy, but ride, handling, quality, braking, appearance, luxury, cost and reliability are also important factors.

I drove the IS350 and 335 and they felt like totally different cars. The IS350 is a very nice car, but it wasn't nearly as responsive as the 335. It didn't feel connected to me or the road. BMW invented the sports sedan and you can FEEL the car's heritage when you drive one.

The 335 is the clear choice for the vast majority of enthusiasts.

Depends on who is buying and what they are looking for. For example most people buying exotics aren't necessarily looking for reliability or comfort. Each person has there own set of factors.

My point is that there's a lot more to a car than straight line performance. Plus, the vast majority of buyers consider most of those factors, even though they give them different weights. Plus, most people that buy exotics don't want to buy a car that breaks down all the time, so reliability is a factor for them too.

I agree...handling is what separates BMW from the rest of the pack.

I test drove the IS350 and found it overall to be quite nice but it just ain't a Bimmer..I guess that's why BMW is the benchmark of all sports sedans...nobody out there has quite figured out the algorithms of what makes BMW so unique and I dounbt they ever will..once you've driven a BMW nothing else comes close in terms of ride and handling.

What's interesting is that I could feel and hear the 18" wheels on the IS350 and they didn't seem like they belonged on the car. When I drove the 335, I knew it had 18's, but I couldn't feel or hear them.

BMW seems to put the pieces together better than its competitors.

I raced my friend's IS 350 a few months back. Did many runs. He could not believe how fast my car is. Every race we did I ended up over a car's length. Then we switched cars for a bit and did some spirited driving. Handling wise I was pretty disappointed. Had that numb steering feel made me lose my confidence in tight turns. When I made 90 degree turns with that car, I heard a lot of screeching noise from the tires at the speed where my car would be silent. His response after driving my car was "Damn, I should of waited a little more for a 335." Nice car, but I think I like mine better. There are a lot of IS 350's around in Fullerton. Find one and see for yourself. :cool

Great informative post. Thanks.

The IS350 feels like a completely different car designed and built for a different audience. It's a very nice car; I'd love to have one as a second car. It would be great to drive on a day I feel like kicking back and letting the car do most of the work for me. But it doesn't feel like an enthusiast's car like the 335 does.

I think they didn't have great success out-BMWing BMW with the 1st gen IS so they decided to go in a different direction.

That makes sense. The market they are going after is much bigger and they are good at building luxury cars. Why try to compete with BMW for smaller market share?

Not long ago someone posted track results of a tuned 335 vs an ISF. for 300 to 500 dollars, the 335 spanked the >400HP ISF. Take that however you will. When I set out to buy a car, I test drove the Infiniti G37, IS350/ISF, MB all are listed as the same class as the 335 or above, but none really provide the driving precision and connection with the road as the 335. If you want comfort and techno gizzmos go with any of those cars and you will be happy. If you want a driving experience you really can't beat the 335 for all around handling power and comfort.

I had an '04 M3 for a year before I finally decided that the suspension didn't work for an everyday driver. Bought the IS350 and told all my friends that Lex had built a "better BMW". After driving it for a year, I was bored & tried the 335. Within 300 yards without exceeding 35mph I saw the error of my ways. My wife has the Lex, and I feel like Goldilocks in my 335 E92.

if your not happy with the speed of your 335, you should get a dinan ecu upgrade
it costs $2000 and makes about 80 horsepower
