View Full Version : IP build - finishing it up
vmwerks 04-03-2008, 02:57 PM Hey everyone... I have a few shots of the motor I'm building for my IP car. All the usual suspects, Sunbelt cams, VAC oil pump shaft upgrade, 1 size overbore, balanced, blueprinted blah blah blah.
We've been working on the interior cleaning and finalizing other changes to meet this years rules, fire safety etc.
My oil pan custom baffled LTW unit (I think) I purchased the entire oiling system from "empty" a fellow board member:

jayhudson 04-04-2008, 10:37 AM Walter-
Will you be doing Laguna? Not me. I'm planning on TH in May.
Jay
TIATO 04-04-2008, 10:56 AM Walter,
looks great. I love the look of clean engines.
What did you use to paint the interior? Cage painting next on the to do list?
vmwerks 04-05-2008, 02:22 AM Jon: Thanks I was in a rush to get out onto the track last year and left alot of unfinished business.
Jay: I am shooting for Laguna but I need a test day in between to break in the motor, clutch and try out some suspension changes.
TIATO: The paint is from Eastwood, it's a cast iron grey. the black is roll on Rhino Liner from Pep Boys... I have to give thanks to Scott Neville, one of our SpecE30 competitors, for taking care of the interior.
The cage is going to be painted white and I have some aluminum fab work to get finished...
vmwerks 04-19-2008, 01:29 AM The engine, clutch and transmission are in and I am finishing up the wiring conversion to OBD1. A few last mnute parts are on their way from Bimmerworld and I should be ready to run at Thunderhill with the Formula BMW's... ;) BTW Kevin (vmtech) ground off the paint around my "cracks" in the shock towers... no torn metal, the paint had chipped off where the metal was stressed. We are going to reinforce the area and pray for the best.

JonathanL 04-19-2008, 12:32 PM Looking good, and glad you got it all wrapped up in time for Thunderhill. Are you going to have time to break the new motor in before hand?
Looking forward to seeing you out there soon... Plan on going to the Willow Springs weekend, too.
vmwerks 04-19-2008, 09:01 PM At the rate I am going I'll be breaking it in on the streets around the shop :eyecrazy
I signed up for the race.... :)

vmwerks 04-22-2008, 01:45 AM hahaha Jim... hopefully you won't be beating your steering wheel yelling "step on it!" anymore!
Danny you back in town yet? Our neighbors are used to us running around the streets in race cars... :)
the wildest thing I drove was a Dwarf circle track car. It was a real hoot... of course.
Tow Pro's owner Mike Coleman let me drive his shifter Kart... sick fast for sure.
vmwerks 04-30-2008, 12:04 AM I am nearing completion of the OBD1 Sunbelt etc etc buildout. I dropped oil into the motor and gave it a twist of the key. Amazingly it fired right up..

I am also confused... :confused
jayhudson 04-30-2008, 10:47 AM Threads merged.
Seems we had a mad bomber last evening. Hence the deleted post and confusion about it.

Yeah, I love when that happens. I completely gutted and respliced the wiring in our car, put it all back, plugged it all in, and turned the key. Started on the first try! Really a good feeling.
Nice work, and good luck at your next race!

Thanks alot, I am always surprised when a big project fires up the first time. I guess I should not admit that in front of potential customers??? :devillook

:) my old headers.. in the interest of a speedy build I used a set of welded OBD2 manifolds.
I drove the car in the parking lot today.. OMG. I will need to take it easy at Thunderhill Thursday and Friday... :devillook

Well after driving the car around the block today....
I hope you won't be screaming get out of the way anytime soon!!! :nono
S.Lang 05-07-2008, 05:29 PM Isn't it nice to have it running? Nice job Walter. My biggest stress point on any new motor build is waiting for that first moment of oil pressure as you crank it with the coils disconnected....
dtothepowerofp 05-07-2008, 05:42 PM How much horsepower do you estimate you got from this engine?
Massive Lee 05-07-2008, 09:24 PM Hey VMWerks
I noticed you still had the plastic thermostat housing. Remember that it easily cracks and can ruin your weekend. A brand new aluminum housing can be bought for $25.
vmwerks 05-10-2008, 11:14 AM How much horsepower do you estimate you got from this engine?
Sunbelt motors built correctly will average 275 at the wheels FWIU

We have had nothing but trouble with the aluminum housings lately. Everything from porous castings to warped mating surfaces. It sucks when you sell the idea to a customer then have to go through as many as 3 of them to get one that works. For now we use the OEM plastic ones on customer cars. A new plastic housing won't be a problem to run an entire season.

Yes it is! The car ran strong even with catalytic converters in it (long story). There is alot of potential in it and we'll be on the dyno with different exhaust setups to squeeze out the last few bits of HP.

Very nice. Any details on which exhaust setups you are going to try?

Might want to work on the handling a bit too :stickoutt
Ton of fun running with you on Fri. And THANKS for the tire
