View Full Version : bottom mount hx35, will it even fit?
i have a treadstone manifold which im guessing holds the turbo close to the same general area as other mass produced manifolds, after sizing it up and lookin aruond, im not sure this thing is even going to fit (the turbo).. i've been searching and i cant seem to find any info on google of anyone actually running one bottom mounted in a 3 series, most seem to be top mount. its a non wastegated model at least.. no flange on the comp housing and straight v band hotside
i know its not the biggest turbo runnin around here on a e36, but the comp housing seems extra large
i was also thinking of flipping the manifold and making a adapter to make it top mount if theres room, im gona test fit one of these days

It's actually not even close.
You are likely to have issues hitting the compressor housing on the motor mount.
screwbacca 04-03-2008, 11:11 AM cant u get one of those after market mounts

Any numbers to quantify this issue?
Bigmac834 04-03-2008, 01:20 PM here is some pics of a M coupe with the treadstone manifold...i got a pretty small turbo.
Might give you an idea of what yours would look like
what turbo exactly? also any under car shots? thanks for posting pics
Bigmac834 04-03-2008, 03:21 PM its tough getting any pics under the car without something blocking.
turbo is a T3/T4 60trim
JordanMD88 04-03-2008, 03:42 PM Any chance of getting a really good picture like from the front of the turbo looking back towards the transmission, To give a good perspective on the turbo placement, From these pictures It looks really low and inside *toward the engine*
5mall5nail5 04-03-2008, 04:02 PM Its on an M coupe. Treadstone wouldn't make a manifold that doesn't work - Jason knows whats up.
Bigmac834 04-03-2008, 08:50 PM ya the turbo does sit pretty low, I just hope I don't have any problems with the oil drain.

Did you have a chance to get that frontal view of the turbo so we can see exactly where it sits?
e36'n 04-03-2008, 09:48 PM It should fit, but you'll definitely have to change the motor mount and bushing. It has a bigger turbine than my HY35, but it's the compressor that I had the most trouble with.

No sorry I got really busy, but I'll try and take one tomorrow morning
niks325i 04-03-2008, 11:54 PM The Holset is big, but I can't see it being any bigger than some of the other turbos that the big hp guys are running.
Nik
i had my hands on a sc61 recently and the hx35 compressor housing seemed noticably larger
e36'n 04-04-2008, 04:31 PM The issue with the Holset is that the center cartridge is longer than a similar sized Garrett so the compressor housing is more towards the front of the car. In turn, it hits the bushing, so you have to modify that. I used a spacer and a e30 bushing, but I didn't tighten the top nut enough, so my motor moves more than it should. I have to modify the motor mount bracket later as I can't tighten the top nut enough.
I also had to modify the collector flange on the manifold as you can see in the pics. It's a LOT of work, but maybe it'll work better with a different manifold. A HX35 turbine is bigger, so you probably wouldn't have to worry about the compressor housing hitting the manifold as I did.
Check these two threads for more pics I added:

Bigmac834 04-04-2008, 07:27 PM I couldn't get a straight picture from the front because my brother already started putting the flex tube on. I posted what pics he took.
I only looked down there for a couple seconds but I really don't think you can fit a bigger compressor housing than what I have. guess you would have to modify it like e36'n said.
side question a little OT: I got the aircraft scat tubing, I touches the manifold on the way up, that would probably melt it right? anything I can to stop that?
screwbacca 04-04-2008, 11:44 PM whats up with that tube lol
that looks like bullshit. i wonder if i can flip my manifold and make a angled adapter and top mount this thing
im almost done with the "shakedown" and will start soon hopefully, so maybe i can answer some of my own questions
xjeeper 04-04-2008, 11:48 PM That is for sure going to melt..... try and find a proper pipe if you can.

probly gona smell like scat a minute after you fire the car up. id avoid using that but i dont know what its made of but it better be some serious shit if its touching the manifold or even close to it

Thats an interesting concept. Have any pics/evidence it fits an E36 any better??
highboostingm3 04-05-2008, 02:10 AM You guys, the only difference between this manifold and the Technique Tuning exhaust manifold is the wastegate port and I think we all know how well the TT manifold works so stop the guessing games. :)

Cam, guessing wont ever make a manifold fit that doens't fit very well. We can see now that it obviously fits the Z3 chassis like shit. As I asked before, do we have any proof (in the form of pictures/first-hand experience) that this manifold fits an E36 worth a damn either?
Bigmac834 04-05-2008, 11:22 PM I think i'm gonna order 3" on the same tubing and try that...I don't think it is possible to run a metal pipe for the intake cause it would hit, i'll check tomorrow to be sure

You didn't read my post. Does the Technique Tuning manifold have a problem with fitment?
Bigsalgt 04-06-2008, 01:35 PM ^^On an E36 body style, no! Has anyone tryed this exhaust manifold with a Holset turbocharger?
^^On an E36 body style, no!
With the turbos the kit uses, with the hardware the kit uses... no.

This isn't a TT manifold :shifty

I know but it is almost the same casting from the same foundry...just the wastegate port location is different.
Since this is a Z3 car I don't know about clearance with a normal TO4E turbo but there was no issue with a GT35R on a Mcoupe. Holset...not so sure with that bigass turbine housing, etc.
my turbine housing is just average sized, its a 16cm non-wastegated, the compressor housing is what im more worried about hitting stuff, its big
