Well my second bimmer has not been as reliable as mye32. I've had it a month now and it's still at the shop. Coolant seeped up the wiring harness and fried the DME, tried many cheaper ways but you know BMW, there aren't many short cuts. Hopefully, $3,000 later, it will be OK. Is there anyway that BMW would help me on this oddity of an occurance? Anybody, anybody, cupholders still suck:mad

*oink oink* in the sky

(that's a pig flying, with the same probability that ANY car company will help you on ANY oddity, including ones it knows about.)

I'm not familiar with this coolant-traveling-up phenomenon. Can you explain further?

coolant from the thermostat rides up the harness all the way to the dme and it cakes up the prongs corroding the connections. The 2 shorts the connectors on the plug, entire harness is bad because of one plug, $880, dme prongs are bad $1100. check you plugs once in a while

Hi. Have you already had the work done? There is a recent post on Bimmerfest (long) that talks about this problem. Also, I would think you could get a used DME at a reasonale cost.

tried a used dme but it didn't take. at least that is what the guys told me. I just have to bite it and enjoy the ride when it gets fixed. I'll post it soon as I get it back and cleaned up

Good customer? Owned many bimmers in the past? Original owner? Planning on buying a new BMW in the not too distant future? Have service work performed at a dealer? If you answered yes to 3 or more of these questions, BMW might want to help you out. Talk to the Service Manager at your dealer, or is your car at an independant? If not, you lose.

Where have you been? DME's can't be swapped since the mid 90's. At least not easily.

The guys weren't lying. Make sure that the thermostat gets replaced or you'll fry another DME. Man,would that suck.:cool

well, if you dont like it you can always give it to me free of charge

all vehicles have there time, can't really get around it. at least your coolant didn't leak into your oil and screw the motor up seriously.

replaced the thermostat, independent mechanics, I know they didn't lie. Can't blame a guy for trying to do some of it yourself. To some people $3000 is a lot of money

You better sell!:D

Seriously, 7er's can be expensive but a single repair for $3K is not normal.
I see 3K repair bills all the time but they're for multiple items i.e brakes, thrust rod bushings + alignment, oil change, 1-2 power steering hoses, etc., etc., etc.

3K is HUGE when the car is broken. Not so huge when you know work needs to be done, or the mods begin.:cool

If my car needed $3k in work, I'd be in a whole load of trouble. I'd be walking for a couple months at least.

well it so happened to be the two most expensive items under the hood except for the engine, all I can say is that this is this cars moment. It was perfect until then, bought tires for some 17" found cheap. Imight sell it now to make the money back. What's the going rate for 2001 740iL 110,000

My 733 hasn't moved in almost 4 months, so don't feel too bad.
