I was driving today, and saw an 88 535is listed for $1500, but i can get it for $900. I drove it and the shifter was a little messed up, the clutch was good, no stereo, but the sunroof worked and so did the power seats. It had 168,8XX miles on the odo, but the tach was busted. the interior was decent for a 20 year old car and the bugger goes like none other. There is a bit of power steering buzz, and it was riding a little rough, but other than that, it's in decent shape for $900 and an 88. A new shifter would help the shifter problem. Does this seem like a good deal to you?

Thanks so much

It may have shifter slop as usual, but it may have been converted into a 5spd which is typical. I will give you one important piece of advice, CHECK FOR RUST everywhere you can, specifically the under carriage trunk and wheel wells. Without seeing the car I can't tell you its worth, but if it is mainly rust free and doesn't look or drive badly, I would not think twice about buying it.

Just the front seats, OEM cat, front air dam and rear spoiler are almost worth that!

You'll have to add up all of the other things that it will need, then add that to the $900 and see if it's worth it to you.

Will you be doing the repairs or paying someone? Labor can add up quick!

as stated above, rust is the main thing. I bought mine with no rust and not running for 1200. so yeah 900 is pretty cheap. how is the paint? If you know how to work on it yourself then you should be fine.

I'd say at $900 you can't beat it. All of the issues seem very easily fixed with a little bit of work. Like mentioned make sure there isn't any major rust on the car. Shifter parts are fairly cheap and while you are in there you should replace the guibo and center bearing. The inoperative tach is probably due to a bad SI board.
