Some of 'ya know me, and some of 'ya don't. I'm Andy, and I'm a gigantic lump of German ancestry in a gorilla shaped body. For some reason I like really, really small cars. I owned a couple of CRXs in the 80s, but those were just too big so I got into Minis. :) Right now I've got 2, but only one is going to be staying. This is so that I can get "my" car and start to enjoy it. I'm not going to have a lot of cash to spend (as the eyes roll and people start to lose interest...) but I need something that I can drive back and forth to school and also to work. Right now I'm finishing up my junk at Windward CC (we live in Kaneohe) and I'm going to be working over in town (Iwilei area).

So... I need a car. Something from Deutschland this time. I'm a big fan of hatchbacks, but I also like rear wheel wheel drive. That's going to rule out finding another VW GTi. I started thinkin that I should take a look at BMW. My dad owned many (starting with a 2800 when he was stationed in Deutschland, and finishing up with an '88 535i), and I've always enjoyed them myself. I've tried to be realistic in my choices considering this is a car I'm going to have to fund with my poor-ass student income. Sorry, E36 or E30 M3... I'll catch 'ya on the rebound. I'm going to have to aim my sights squarely at the 4 banger offerings this time. I'm hoping that I can find something that I can also autocross, 'cause even though I am lacking in talent I really do have a good time out there.

Ok, blah blah enough talking, schnitzel breath. What are you looking for?!?!?

I know I'm not going to get any beauty queens, but that hasn't stopped me in the past, wether buying a car or... ah, nevermind. ;) I'd love to find a 1600, 2002, 316, 318, 320, or maybe a 325. What do you folks know is out there in the not-too-distant future for sale? It's time for me to return to my roots and put something German under me. I wish I would have hung on to my '87 Porsche 924S from a few years ago. Not the fastest thing on the road, but a good little car.

Oh - and as for the Mini, I'm keeping my green car (the one I brought to a Cars & Coffee). That one runs great. The '66 Cooper S is getting shoved out the door.

How's about an 02 MCS Liquid Yellow/Black? :evil2

I would say to look for an E36 in stick, preferably 325i or 328i.

there is an E36 318ti for sale here on maui, i think it is listed on craigslist. they guy is a customer of the shop i manage, he is asking way too much money, but im sure he has had no interest thus far and might be willing to come down to a realistic level now.

I still miss our 2002 MINI. Aside from the difficulties we had with the dealership it was a really fun car.

The 318ti is definitely on the list. I think it's all going to come down to how much (or little) money I've got after the Subaru and the Mini parts are sold. Err...and how much the finance minister lets me have. :)

Definitely manual transmission. I won't even consider an auto. I've got full use of all 4 limbs, and I intend to use them as Thor provided.

Andy -
What happened to your Subie project?

The Suby is here. Finishing up a few loose ends on it and then it's goin up for sale. I've got a heavy right foot and no discipline. :) Now I see why everyone loves turbo'd cars!

I have wanted a BMW for quite a while now. I figured this might be a good opportunity. Just gotta get some stuff sold and figure out what my allowance is before I start shoppin. Plenty of time for me to read up and get semi-educated. If I remember correctly, you're out there at Auto-x with a 318is right?

Yeah, but I haven't been autox'n for some time now. Not enough time on Sundays.
Well at least with a 318 you won't have to worry about not being disciplined, and having a heavy right foot will come in handy. Just be sure to get one with a sunroof so you can stick your head out...you're too big dude! :D

I'm going to have to hold off on figuring out exactly how many Deutsch Marks I have to play with until I get the Subaru sold. Went to pick up some trim clips and window switches today.. $211! Ach!

Looks like the "Sport" is definitely the model I want to get if I end up going the 318ti route. As for a sunroof ... I am going to really, really, really try hard to find one without it. A sunroof actually takes away a few inches of headroom depending on the car!

Jayson - I think your Cayman is still new enough you never even got plates. Damn... why don't you just drive the cars you like around the dealer's lot a few times and leave 'em a $20? :) As for your other offer, well, now that I have a job again... bah, who am I kidding. I'm going to need money for race tires. ;)

The sunroof on a 318ti is a Webasto. :D

Andy, let me know if you need any Subie parts.

Thank 'ya guys. Appreciated! :)

Went to pick up window switches and door sill clips for the Subie yesterday. $211. Yeeeeeeeech! I asked the guy if they were machined out of billet titanium or something.

Beast - if it's a webasto - then that'd be hooooooge! That'd be kinda cool. Wonder if it turns the car into a flexi-flyer though by chopping all that roof out?

Another guy (over on the Mini forum) suggested I don't rule out the 320i. He said they're much simpler to work on than the 318ti. Hopefully I can get the Suby out the door soon and start working on tearing apart the '66 Mini for sale. ... (sigh) I really wish I could afford an E30 M3. or an M6 (the old one not the new "lump of poo in a wind tunnel" look). Not exactly fuel efficient though, that's for sure. Maybe once I finally finish my degree and get a big boy job. Then again, I still have to buy my pre 73.5 911. Jeez. I really need a rich uncle who's got Big Oil money or somethin like that. :)
