i have a 99 323i with 103k miles and i have an oil leak on the front part of the engine oil pan. i replaced the valve cover gasket, and i am sure the engine does not leak from there. also i am sure it is not the oil pan gasket. it seems to drip to that location. could it be the oil filter reservoir leaking. does it use a gasket or do you use hi temp silicone adhesiveto seal it to the engine block.

The first step in solving this is to determine the source of the leak. That's accomplished by throughly cleaning the engine (from the top and bottom) and then watching for the first sign of fluid. Adding dye to the oil and checking with a black light makes that task a bit easier.

There is a gasket at the housing that can leak. It is a proper gasket and not rtv etc.
